FIA cancels the Chinese Grand Prix Formula One 2023

The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) or Federation of International Automobiles which organizes the Formula One or F1 motor racing championship has cancelled the Chinese Grand Prix 2023 due to the covid related restriction imposed in the country.

The race was scheduled to be held in Shanghai on 16 April 2023. Last time a F1 race was held in China was in 2019.

Thousands of people across the cities in China have been demonstrating against the governments strict zero covid policy. Many cities in China are under lockdown as record daily virus cases are being reported across China. The new season of the F1 will start from Bahrain on 5 March 2023. The 2023 season will feature a record 24 races which included the Chinese race also.

Formula One (F1)

  • The F1 World Championship season consists of a series of motor car races, known as the Grands Prix. 
  • It is organised by FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) or Federation of International Automobiles.
  • Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton hold the record for the most F1 world championships titles, both having won the title on seven occasions.

2. A fine performance by Sheldon Jackson and Jani help Saurastra win the Vijay Hazare trophy 2022-23

Vijay Hazare trophy 2022-23

A fine century by Sheldon Jackson (133 runs) and Chirag Jani’s  hat trick(3 for 43) helped Saurashtra defeat  Maharashtra's to win their second Vijay Hazare Trophy title (2022-23) in  the final played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad , Gujarat.

Saurashtra won the Vijay Hazare Trophy for the first time in 2007-08.

Himachal Pradesh was the 2021-22 winner.

Batting first, the Maharashtra team scored 248 for 9 in their allotted 50 overs, helped by   captain Ruturaj Gaikwad’s fourth century in five matches in the tournament to help Maharashtra post 248 for 9. Ruturaj scored 108 runs. Saurashtra scored 249 for 5 in 46.3 overs.

Sheldon Jackson was the player of the match while Ruturaj Gaikwad was declared the Player of the series.

Vijay Hazare Trophy 

The Vijay Hazare Trophy named after a famous Indian batsman Vijay Hazare. It is an annual domestic limited-overs cricket domestic competition. It is organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). 

The tournament was started in the 2002-03 season.

Tamil Nadu is the most successful team having won the trophy five times.

The third T20 World Cup Cricket Tournament for the Blind will be held from December 5 to 17, 2022 in India.

Important facts

  • The participating countries of the World Cup 2022 are Australia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and India.

  • Around 150 players from all countries will participate in the tournament and there will be a total of 24 matches across nine cities in India.

5. NADA India to host Inclusion Conclave for the first time to focus on athletes with disabilities on 2nd December 2022

NADA India to host Inclusion Conclave

India will host an Inclusion Conclave for the first time which will focus on anti-doping education and process for athletes with disabilities. The Conclave organised by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA India) with the help of  WADA  (World Anti-Doping Agency) Asia-Oceania office, will be held on 2 December 2022 in New Delhi.

The conclave will focus on developing a policy and legal framework on anti-doping as well as on educating the disable athletes on the anti -doping process and controls. 

Doping in sports means the use of unauthorized drugs by the athletes to enhance their performance in sports.

National Anti-Doping Agency or NADA 

The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) is the national organization responsible for promoting, coordinating, and monitoring the doping control program in sports in all its forms in the country. It is the member of the World Anti-Doping Agency.

6. Stephanie Frappart of France to be first woman referee at men's World Cup

Stephanie Frappart of France to be first woman referee at men's World Cup

FIFA has announced on 29 November 2022 that Stephanie Frappart of France will be the first woman to referee a men’s’ World Cup match. She will officiate the match to be played between Germany and Costa Rica in Group E on 2 December 2022.

France's Stephanie Frappart is one of three women referees among the 36 selected for the tournament in Qatar, alongside Rwandan Salima Mukansanga and Japan's Yoshimi Yamashita.

She was the first woman to referee in France's domestic Ligue 1 in 2019, the same year she took charge of the women's World Cup final in her home country.

Frappart also officiated the 2019 UEFA Super Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea, before refereeing the Champions League in 2020 and then the French Cup final last season.

The FIFA World Cup 2022 is being held in Qatar from 20 November to 18 December 2022.

“Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards’ for year 2021

The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has announced the name of the winners of the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards for the year 2021. The Ministry announced the National sports awards winner list on 14 November 2022 but the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award winners' names were not announced.

Winner of the award and category 

Lifetime Achievement Award: Group Captain Bhawani Singh Samyal 

Land Adventure category: Naina Dhakad

Water Adventure category: Shubham Dhananjay Vanmal

No one was chosen for the Air Adventure category. 

They will be conferred the award by President Droupadi Murmu  at a function in Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi  on 30th November, 2022 along with the winners of other National  sports awards .

They will receive statuettes, certificates and award money 15 lakh rupees each. 

Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 

It was set up in 1994 in the memory of Tenzing Norgay. He is an Indian of Nepali origin who along with a New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary scaled Mount Everest on 29 May 1953.

The award is given in adventure sports like mountaineering, skydiving, and open water swimming.

On 28 November, Rituraj Gaikwad, playing for Maharashtra, became the first batsman in List-A cricket to hit 7 sixes in an over in the quarter-finals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

  • Gaikwad made this record against Uttar Pradesh in Ahmedabad.

  • He remained unbeaten after scoring 220 runs off 159 balls. This is his first double century in List-A cricket, before that 187 not out was his best score.

  • This is also his sixth century in the last 8 innings of Vijay Hazare Trophy.

  • In the 49th over of the innings, he scored 43 runs including 7 sixes on left arm spinner Shiva Singh.

PT Usha will be the first woman president of the Indian Olympic Association

High-flying PT Usha is all set to become the first woman president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) as she has emerged as the only candidate in the election for the post to be held on December 10.

Important facts

  • November 27 was the last day for filing nominations and none other than PT Usha filed a claim.

  • PT Usha has won the Asian Games gold medal. At the same time, in the 1984 Olympics, she finished fourth in the final of the 400 meters hurdles.

  • PT Usha, the first woman President of the Indian Olympic Association, is 58 years old.

  • PT Usha has won 11 medals in Asian Games and 23 medals in Asian Championships in her career. These include 18 gold medals.

  • PT Usha has won 4 gold medals in Asian Games and 14 gold medals in Asian Championships.

  • She is currently the committee head of the Pratibha Sangh of India. This committee conducts national level Indian Talent Olympiad exams in schools all over India.

  • PT Usha, who hails from Kerala, has studied at Providence Women's College, Kozhikode.
