About Sanjay Malhotra:
- Sanjay Malhotra will be the 26th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
- A 1990-batch officer of the Indian Administrative Service of the Rajasthan cadre, Mr. Malhotra is acomputer science engineering graduatefrom the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and has a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Princeton University, U.S.A.
- He will take charge of the country’s monetary policy framework and banking regulation at Mint Street on December 11.
About RBI:
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is the central bank of India whose primary function is to manage and govern the financial system of the country.
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was established based on the recommendations of theRoyal Commission on Indian Currency and Finance, also known as the Hilton-Young Commission.
- The RBI was established in1934 by the Reserve Bank of India Act and began operations on April 1, 1935,and has beenlocated in Mumbai.
- The RBI is controlled by the Government of India and comes under the Ministry of Finance.
- The RBI Governor is appointed by the Central government.
- The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is led by the RBI Governor.

Who was Chittaranjan Das?
- Chittaranjan Das born Nov. 5, 1870, Calcutta (now Kolkata) India and died June 16, 1925, in Darjeeling .
- He was an Indian politician, leader of the Indian National Congress and founder of the Swaraj (Independence) Party in Bengal under British rule.
- The people of India honored him with the titleDeshbandhu (“Friend of the Country”).
- After graduating from Presidency College, Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1890, Das traveled to England to appear for the Indian Civil Service (ICS) examination but, failing to qualify, chose to enter the legal profession.
His contribution in Indian freedom movement:
- He defended many accused of political offenses and took an active part in nationalistic journalism.
- Bitterly opposing British rule in India and rejecting all ideas of political or economic development of India along Western lines, he idealized the life of the ancient Indian village and saw a golden age in ancient Indian history.
- He supported the noncooperation movements launched against British rule by Mahatma Gandhi and in 1921 was imprisoned for six months as a political offender.
- In 1922 he became president of the Indian National Congress. Under his leadership the Congress abandoned its intentions to boycott colonially sponsored elections for provincial councils.
- The swaraj party was formed by Chittaranjan Das and Motilal Nehru and other members of the Indian National Congress on 1 January 1923.
