Koneru Humpy win’s Silver at the World Chess Blitz championship

Former Indian World Rapid Chess champion Koneru Humpy won the silver medal in the women's section of the FIDE World Blitz Chess Championship that concluded in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 30 December 2022. 

She finished on 12.5 points, just half a point behind the winner Bibisara Balabayeva of Kazakhstan. Koneru Humpy has won the World Rapid Chess Championship 2019.

World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship 2022

The International Chess governing body FIDE organises World Rapid and Blitz chess championship at the end of the year. This year it was held in Kazakhstan's capital Almaty from 26-30 December 2022.

World Rapid Chess Championship 

It was held on 26 and 28 December at Almaty, Kazakhstan.

In the Rapid section the Men’s title was won by No.1 Magnus Carlsen of Norway. It was the 4th time that Carlsen has won the Rapid title.

The women's title was won by the Chinese Grand Master Tan Zhongyi.  

Savitha Shri of India won the Bronze medal in the world Rapid section.

World Blitz Chess Championship 

It was held on 29 and 30 December at Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The men’s section was won by Magnus Carlsen. He became the first player in chess history to hold the Classical chess world championship, Rapid world championship and the Blitz world Championship at the same time.

Women's Section

The women's section was won by Bibisara Balabayeva of Kazakhstan. 

Koneru Humpy came second and won the Silver medal. 

Indian medal winners in the Rapid and Blitz event

Only three Indian’s Viswanathan Anand, Koneru Humpy and Savitha Shri have won medals at the FIDE   World Rapid and Blitz chess championship.

Viswanathan Anand won the Gold medal in World Rapid and Bronze medal in World Blitz Championship 2017.

Surya Kumar Yadav and Smriti Mandhana included in the ICC T 20 cricketer of the year award nominee list

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the list of nominated players for its various categories of year end awards. 

2022 ICC Women’s T 20 cricketer of the year nominee

Indian opening batter Smriti Mandhana, Pakistan’s all-rounder Nida Dar, New Zealand’s all-rounder Sophie Devine and Australian all-rounder Tahlia McGrath have been nominated for the ICC Women’s T 20 cricketer of the year 2022.

2022 ICC men’s T 20 cricketer of the year 

Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav, Sikandar Raza of Zimbabwe, Sam Curran of England and Pakistan’s wicketkeeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan have been nominated for the ICC men’s T 20 cricketer of the year 2022. 

2022 ICC women’s ODI cricketer of the year nominee 

South African bowler Shabnim Ismail, New Zealand All-rounder Amelia Kerr, England’s all-rounder Nat Sciver and Australia’s Wicketkeeper batter Alyssa Healy have been nominated for the  ICC  women’s ODI  cricketer of the year 2022. 

2022 ICC Men’s ODI cricketer of the year Nominee 

Pakistan’s Captain Babar Azam, Australian spinner Adam Zampha, Zimbabwe’s batter Sikandar Raza and West Indian batsmen Shai Hope have been nominated for the ICC Men's ODI cricketer of the year 2022. 

Earlier Arshdeep Singh, Yastika Bhatia and Renuka Singh were included in the 2022 ICC emerging player of the year award nominee list.

Arshdeep Singh, Yastika Bhatia and Renuka Singh of India nominated for the ICC emerging cricketer of the year 2022 men's and women's category respectively

Indian Arshdeep Singh has been included in the men’s and Yastika Bhatia  and Renuka Singh in the women’s section of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC)  emerging player of the year 2022 award nominee list.  

The nominee list was announced by the ICC on 28 December 2022.

The ICC emerging Men’s player of the year award 2022 nominee includes Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh of India, South African fast bowler Marco Jansen, Afghanistan’s batsman Ibrahim Zardan and New Zealand’s batsman Finn Allen

Arshdeep Singh who plays for Punjab Kings team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) made his international debut for India in the T-20s and One Day International (ODI) in 2022. The fast-bowler played 21 T20Is for India, taking 33 wickets at an economy of 8.17.

ICC women’s player of the year award 2022 nominee 

Indian fast bowler Renuka Singh and Batter Yastika Bhatia, England batter Alice Capsy and Australian bowler Darcie Brown have been included by the ICC in its emerging women player of the year award 2022.

Last year Janneman Malan of South Africa and Sanna Mir of Pakistan were declared the ICC men’s and women’s player of the year award 2021 respectively.

Government recognises e-sports as part of multisports events

The Government of India has officially recognised ‘E-Sports’ (Electronic Sports) as a part of Multi-sports events on 27th December.

Important facts

  • E-sports will be handled by the Department of Sports under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

  • This decision was taken by President Draupadi Murmu, using the powers given in provision 3 of Article 77 of the Constitution, after changing the rules related to e-sports.

  • It is noteworthy that since the inclusion of e-sports as a demonstration sport in the Jakarta Asian Games 2018, there has been a demand to make it a part of the multi-sport event.

  • The International Olympic Committee is also promoting e-sports and in this exercise, the first Olympic e-sports week will also be celebrated in Singapore in June 2023.

  • Next year's Asian Games in China will see the debut of e-sports.

  • The Indian Esports Industry has been fighting for E-sports not to be clubbed under the umbrella term “Gaming”.

Government recognises e-sports as part of multisports events

Nikhat Zareen, Lovlina Borgohain win gold medals

World Champion Nikhat Zarin of Telangana and the Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain of Assam won gold medals in their   respective weight categories at the 6th Elite National Women’s Boxing Championships 2022 in Bhopal on 26 December 2022. 

The 6th Elite National Women’s Boxing Championship was held at the Tatya Tope Stadium, Bhopal, and Madhya Pradesh from 20-26 December 2022. 302 women boxers from all over the country participated in the event. 

The Railways team topped the medals tally with 10 medals - five golds, three silvers and two bronze.

Madhya Pradesh team came second with one gold, two silver and five bronze, and Haryana with two gold and two bronze claimed the third spot.

Indian Arches dominate the Archery Asia Cup 2022 stage 3, tops the medal tally with 10 medals

Indian archers dominated the Archery Asia Cup 2022 stage 3 held in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates from 20 to 25 December 2022. They topped the medal tally with 10 medals – five golds, three silvers and two bronze.

Seven of India’s 10 medals at the Archery Asia Cup 2022 stage 3 were won by compound archers. India had sent a junior team to the continental meet.

England's 1966 World Cup-winning right back George Cohen has died aged 83,England's 1966 World Cup-winning right back George Cohen has died aged 83, his former club Fulham announced on 23 December. The club remembered him as their greatest-ever player.

Important facts

  • Born in Kensington, London (England), in 1939, George Cohen played for Fulham throughout his soccer career.

  • He scored six league goals in his 459 appearances between 1956 and 1969.

  • His greatest achievement was recorded as winning the 1966 World Cup when England defeated West Germany in the final at Wembley Stadium.

  • Cohen helped England emerge victorious and claim their first World Cup title with a 4–2 victory over the opposition.

  • He was part of the team's line of defence, which included Ray Wilson, Jack Charlton and captain Bobby Moore.

  • In 1964-1967, Cohen represented England in 37 matches. He also served as vice-captain (VC) of Sir Alf Ramsey for the match against West Germany.

  • Cohen was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 1976 and struggled with the illness for 14 years.

Cyclist Swasti Singh gets Ekalabya Puraskar The ‘Ekalabya Puraskar’ for the year 2022 was presented to cyclist Swasti Singh. This award is given every year to encourage young sporting talents.

  • Singh was on 23rd December presented with a citation, trophy and Rs 5 lakh cash in a programme organised by Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust (IMPaCT), the charitable wing of IMFA.

  • She was honoured for her performance from April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2022 at both national and international levels. 

  • Football player Pyari Xaxa and Hockey player Shilanda Lakra also were honoured with a citation and Rs 50,000 cash each.

  • Billiards and snooker world champion Pankaj Advani attended the ceremony as the chief guest while Pranati Mishra, Asian Games medalist was the guest of honour.

  • Trustee Baijayant Panda, Chairman Eklabya Puraskar Committee – 2022 was present along with the jury members.

  • Mercurial cyclist Swasti has bagged two gold and as many silver medals at the national level.

Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur inaugurates Sports Science Center in Udupi, Karnataka

Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur inaugurated the Sports Science Centre in Udupi on 24 December 2022. The sports science center has been set up by the government of Karnataka.

The state government has set up two sports science centers at Udupi and Bengaluru .These centers will conduct research on medicines, nutritious food, treatment and rehabilitation measures for sportspersons, which would help them to boost their abilities. The Minister said that many more such sports science centers will come up. In the future. 

National Center of Excellence 

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) under the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has also set up its own Sports Science Center at its  

21 National Centres of Excellence (NCOE) and two high performance centers (Bengaluru and Patiala).

It has also set up a National Centre for Sports Sciences and Research (NCSSR) in New Delhi which is the hub of SAI Sports Science Center. 

The National Centers of excellence provides specialized training in selected sports disciplines and also has a well-functioning Sports Science Center.  The National centers of Excellence are at Alleppey and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, Aurangabad and Mumbai in Maharashtra, Bengaluru in Karnataka, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh, Guwahati in Assam, Gandhinagar in Gujarat, Imphal in Manipur, Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh, Jagatpur in Odisha, Kolkata in West Bengal, Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, Patiala in Punjab, Rohtak, Sonepat in Haryana and 5 centers in New Delhi.
