1. Byju’s named the official sponsor of Fifa World Cup 2022 in Qatar

Indian education technology firm Byju’s has been named an official sponsor of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Byju has become the first Indian company to be a sponsor of the FIFA men’s  football world cup. 

The Bengaluru-based firm is also a sponsor for the Indian cricket team

The FIFA Men’s World Cup is scheduled to kick off from November 21 this year in Qatar. The final match of the global tournament will be played on December 18. It is the most prestigious tournament in football, organised every four years, and is one of the biggest sporting events and the biggest single-sport event in the world.

2. Ravindra Jadeja replaces MS Dhoni as the new CSK Skipper

Ravindra Jadeja will replace Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the Captain of the Chennai Superking(CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season. M.S Dhoni who has captained CSK team since the start of IPL in 2008 has voluntarily stepped down as the captain of CSK.

  • Under Dhoni the CSK team  has emerged as one of the  the most successful teams in the IPL winning four titles in the nine finals they have reached. 

  • Mumbai Indian has won five IPL titles.

3. Shimla to get India’s first National Centre for Mountain Terrain Biking

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with the Youth Services and Sports department of the Government of Himachal Pradesh is set to build India’s first-ever Sports Authority of India (SAI) National Centre of Excellence(NCOE) to train athletes in Mountain Terrain Biking and Bicycle Motocross in Shimla.

  • There are 18 Olympic Medals for Mountain Terrain Biking and Bicycle Motocross.

  • The NCOE, which will have the capacity to train around 200 cyclists for Olympic-level preparations.

4. World No 1 Ashleigh Barty announces retirement

World No 1, Australian tennis player, Ashleigh Barty stunned the tennis world on Wednesday by retiring from the sport aged just 25 citing fatigue, lack of motivation as the reasons behind her decision.

Her decision came weeks after becoming the first home Australian Open champion in 44 years

5. Pankaj Advani wins the 19th Asian Billiards Championship 2022

Pankaj Advani of India has won the 19th Asian Billiards Championship 2022 by defeating Dhruv Sitwala of India.

It was his eight Asian titles.

6. FIDE bans Russian Chess Grandmaster Sergey Karjakin for supporting Russian Invasion of Ukraine.

The World Chess governing body FIDE has suspended the Russian chess player Sergey Karjakin for 6 months for his support of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine.

  • Karjakin who was the runner up in the 2016 World Chess championship to Magnus Carlssen of Norway.

  • He also held the record of being the youngest chess Grandmaster at the age of 12 years and seven months, which was broken by American  Abhimanyu Mishra, who became Grandmaster at the age of  12 years 4 months and 25 days.

7. Asia Cup Cricket 2022 will be held in Sri Lanka

At the annual Asian Cricket Council meeting held in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 19 March 2022, decided that the Asia Cup 2022 (T20 Format) will be held in Sri Lanka from August 27-September 11 2022.

  • All five Test teams - hosts Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh - will take part in the tournament while one more Asian side will be decided after a qualifying tournament which will be held from 20 August 2022.

  • The Asia Cup, which usually alternates between ODI and T20I formats, was last played in 2018 and won by India. 

  • The next edition in 2020 was postponed due to covid -19 and it will finally be held in 2022 in Sri Lanka.

  •  Pakistan is scheduled to host the Asian Championship in 2023.

  • Defending champions India are the most successful team in Asia Cup, winning it seven times including the lone T20I edition in 2016 while Sri Lanka have won the competition five times.

8. Jay Shah term as ACC president extended by One year

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah's tenure as president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) was extended by one more year  till 2024 ,at the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting held in Colombo on 19 March 2022.

  • Shah had taken over as the president of the ACC in January last year from Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan, making him the youngest administrator to be re-appointed as ACC president.

9. Lakshya Sen settles for silver in the All England Badminton open

Lakshya Sen lost the final of the All England Badminton championship 2022  to Viktor Axelsen of Denmark on 20 March 2022.   The tournament was held in the English city of Birmingham .The All England is one of the most prestigious badminton tournaments in the world. 

  • So far only two Indians have won the tournament , Prakash Padukone in 1983 and Pullela Gopichand in 2000.

Female singles  title 

  • Akane Yamguchi of Japan won the gold medal  by defeating An Seyoung of South Korea in the finals.

Women's Doubles 

  • Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida (both are Japanese ) defeated Zhang shu xian and Zheng Yu (both are Chinese ) in the final and won the Gold Medal .

  • The Bronze medal was won by the Indian pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela  by defeating the South Korean pair of  Jeong Na Eun and Kim Hye Jeong .

Mens Double titles 

  •  The Indonesian pair of  Muhammad Shohib Fikri and Bagas Mualana  defeated the Indonesian pair of Mohamad Ahsan and Hendra Satiwan to win the gold medal .

Mixed Doubles 

  • The  Japanese pair of  Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higasano  defeated the Chinese pair of Wang Yi Lyu and Huang Dong Ping to win the gold medal .

All England Badminton Championship

  • It is the world’s oldest badminton championship which was started in 1889 in England .

  • It was considered unofficially as the world badminton title until 1977 . After that the International Badminton Federation started its own world championship in 1978. 

  • No Indian female player  has ever won the women's single title at the All England championships .

10. India Win 39 Medals at Asian Youth and Junior Boxing Championships 2022

Indian junior and youth boxers won a total 39 medals at the recently held ASBC Asian Youth and Junior Boxing Championships 2022 in Amman, capital of  Jordan. The championships ended on 16 March 2022.

The tournament saw  the participation of both boys and girls in the youth and junior category. Total  352 boxers from 21 countries participated in the event.

The Indian boxers won 15 gold, 10 silver, and 14 bronze  at the event .

Junior section 

  •  In the junior section the Indian team won 21 medals including eight gold, seven silver and six bronze.

India came second after Uzbekistan which won 23 medals
