India Becomes World's 3rd Largest Domestic Airline Market: According to the Official Airline Guide (OAG) report, India has climbed to the 3rd position in the global domestic airline market, up from 5th in 2014.

• The country's domestic airline capacity increased from 7.9 million in April 2014 to 15.6 million in April 2024.

  • 5th Position: Indonesia.

• Fastest Growing Market: India is highlighted as the fastest growing market among the top 5 domestic markets, with a capacity growth rate of seats increasing at 6.9% per annum over the past 10 years.

• High Low-Cost Carrier (LCC) Presence: India has the highest proportion of Low-Cost Carriers (LCCs) among the top 5 countries. As of April 2024, LCCs accounted for 78.4% of India's domestic capacity.

• IndiGo's Impact: IndiGo has been a major driver of India's LCC growth over the last decade, with its market share nearly doubling from 32% to 62%.

• On 19th November 2023, Indian airlines carried nearly 456,000 domestic passengers, the highest since the COVID-19 pandemic, surpassing pre-COVID averages by 7.4%.

Atul Kumar Chaudhary Named New TRAI Secretary

The Government of India (GoI) has appointed Atul Kumar Chaudhary as the new Secretary of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on deputation on foreign service terms, initially for a period of two years.

• He served as Deputy Director General (DDG) in the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), under the Ministry of Communications (MoC).

• He has held multiple roles in personnel management, human resources (HR), administration, licensing, and the vigilance wing of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and DoT.

UP to Establish World's First Asian King Vulture Conservation and Breeding Centre

Uttar Pradesh (UP) is establishing the 'Jatayu Conservation and Breeding Centre,' the world's first conservation and breeding centre for Asian king vultures (also known as red-headed vultures or Pondicherry vultures) in Maharajganj, UP.

An Overview of the News

• This initiative aims to improve the population of the Asian king vultures, which have been listed as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)'s red list since 2007.

  • Asian king vultures are endangered due to habitat degradation and the overuse of diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used in domestic animals, which becomes poisonous for vultures.

• The centre aims to ensure the good health of growing vultures and provide them with a pair. After the female lays an egg, the pair will be released into their natural environment.

• The enclosure is accessible only to the keeper and is monitored 24x7 by Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras.

Note: The Asian King Vulture is one of the 9 species of vultures found in India.
