1. Macron is reelected as French president

Republican on the move candidate Emmanuel Macron has been re-elected as the President of France.

  • In the presidential election, Emmanuel Macron defeated his right-wing rival Marin Lopen with 58.2% of the vote.

  • Emmanuel Macron is the first president to be elected for a second consecutive term in twenty years.

  • Twenty years ago Mr. Ziak Chirac was elected to a second term.

  • The term of the President is five years. No leader can hold this post for more than two terms.

  • Presidential election process in France

  • In France, the President is elected by direct voting system and ballots are used.

  • Every Frenchman over the age of 18 is entitled to vote. Whether he lives in France or in some other country.

  • There can be a maximum of two phases of election. The first stage is compulsory while the second stage depends on the result of the first. In the first phase, the person who gets more than 50 percent of the votes is declared the winner.

  • In the first phase, if no candidate gets more than 50 percent of the total votes, then the second and final phase is held between the two top candidates who get the maximum votes.

  • To become a candidate, it is necessary to have the support of at least 500 elected representatives (mayor etc.).

2. PM Modi Announces Plan To Issue AYUSH Visas For Foreigners

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Centre would soon introduce a special Ayush visa category for foreign nationals who want to come to India to take advantage of traditional medicine.

  • It will be a part of initiatives to promote medical tourism.

  • With this visa, it will be easier for foreigners to come to India for AYUSH treatment.

  • Ayush methods of treatment are Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy.

  • It aims to further promote medical tourism in the country with a special focus on treatment under traditional systems of medicine.

  • Just as traditional medicine has given a boost to tourism in Kerala, it has the same potential in every nook and corner of the country.

  • As the acceptance of traditional medicines is growing, the market for the Ayush products has grown multifold since 2014 from about Three Billion Dollars to about $18.2 Billion now.

  • Tedros announced holding an annual international meet for Traditional medicines in Gujarat.

  • The first meeting will be held next year, when WHO and India together celebrate 75 years.

3. WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine inaugurated in Jamnagar, Gujarat

PM Modi inaugurated the WHO-Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (GCTM) at Jamnagar in Gujarat.

  • He laid the foundation stone in the presence of Tedros Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General and the Prime Minister of Mauritius Pravind Kumar Jugnauth.

  • The first of its kind, GCTM will be a global centre for traditional medicine around the world.

  • The Centre aims to channel the potential of traditional medicine, by integrating it with technological advancements and evidence-based research. 

  • The centre will focus on data, innovation and sustainability and will optimise the use of traditional medicine.

  • At the centre, the main areas will be research and leadership, evidence and learning, data and analytics, sustainability and equity and innovation and technology. 

  • It provides recognition of India's contribution and potential in traditional medicine.

  • it will support efforts to implement the WHO’s Traditional Medicine Strategy (2014-23) 

  • Jamnagar was chosen for the new centre because more than 50 years ago, the world's first Ayurvedic University was established there.

  • Jamnagar has a quality Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda.

  • According to WHO estimates, 80% of the world’s population uses traditional medicine.

4. Government appoints Lt Gen Manoj C Pande as next Chief of Army Staff

Presently Deputy Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Manoj C Pandey has been appointed by the Government as the next Chief of Army Staff.

  • His appointment to the post will be effective from the afternoon of April 30, 2022.

  • Born on May 06, 1962, Lt Gen Manoj C Pande was commissioned on December 24, 1982 in the Corps of Engineers (The Bombay Sappers) of the Indian Army. 

  • During his long and distinguished service spanning over 39 years, he has served in a variety of Command, Staff and Instructional appointments.

  • The Command appointments of Lt Gen Manoj C Pande include Command of an Engineer Brigade in the Western Theatre, as part of Strike Corps and an Infantry Brigade along with Line-of-Control in Jammu & Kashmir. 

  • Other important Command appointments include a Mountain Division in the high-altitude area of the Western Ladakh and Command of a Corps, deployed along the LAC and in the Counter Insurgency Operations area of Eastern Command.

5. Guru Tegh Bahadur’s birth anniversary

Prime Minister  Narendra Modi will address the nation from Red Fort on April 21, to mark the 400th birth anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur.

The programme will be organised by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee under Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.

  • About Guru Tegh Bahadur

–He was the ninth Sikh Guru.

—His term as Guru ran from 1665 to 1675.

—He was born at Guru ke Mahal (now a Gurudwara with the same name), Amritsar in 1621.

—He was the fifth and the youngest son of Guru Hargobind Sahib. His childhood name was Tyag Mal.

—He stood up for the rights of Kashmiri Pandits.

—He was publicly killed in 1675 on the orders of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Delhi for himself, refusing Mughal rulers and defying them.

—He was publicly assassinated in Delhi in 1675 on the orders of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

  • His Contributions

—He opposed the forced conversion of non-Muslims to Islam during the rule of Aurangzeb.

—He contributed several hymns to the Guru Granth Sahib, including salokas, or couplets.

—He is known to have travelled extensively to propagate the teachings of Nanak.

—He had set up community kitchens and wells for the local people wherever he went.

—He founded the city of Chak-Nanki in Punjab, which later became a part of Anandpur Sahib, a famous holy city and a global tourist attraction in the foothills of the Himalayas.

—Sikhism was founded by Guru Nanak (1469–1539) in the 15th century in the Punjab district of then-undivided India and Pakistan.

6. Shehbaz Sharif elected as the new Prime Minister of Pakistan

The Pakistan Parliament has elected the 70 year old Shehbaz Sharif as the 23rd Prime Minister of Pakistan on 11 April 2022. He secured 174 votes in a 342 lower house called the National Assembly. He is the leader of Pakistan Muslim League (N).

  • He was elected unopposed as the other candidate, former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmmod Qureshi boycotted the poll after his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, boycotted the voting and staged a walkout.

  • Sharif was administered the oath of office by the Senate chairman Sadiq Sanjarani after the Imran Khan supported President Arif Alvi went on a sick leave.

  • Sehbaz Sharif is the younger brother of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif. He has been three times the Chief Minister of the Pakistani province of Punjab.

  • The 100  members of Imran Khan’s PTI party later announced their resignation  from the National Assembly in protest against the removal of the PTI leader Imran Khan Government. Imran Khan has called for nationwide protests and called for early elections in the country.

  •  The Imran Khan Government  had to resign after a vote of no confidence was passed against the government in Pakistan's National Assembly on 10 April 2022. 

  • Imran Khan alleged that America wanted to remove him from the office due to his policy of  supporting China and Russia and  not acceding to the American demand for military bases for operations against Taliban in Afghanistan. America has denied such accusations.

  • The Imran Khan government was becoming increasingly unpopular in Pakistan due to the serious economic crisis in the country and rising prices of daily essential commodities.

  • No Prime Minister in Pakistan has completed its five year terms. Imran khan is the only Prime Minister who has to resign after the passage of a no confidence motion against his government.

7. Shahbaz Sharif elected next Prime Minister of Pakistan

The Parliament of Pakistan (National Assembly) has elected Shahbaz Sharif as the new Prime Minister of the country on 11 April. The political crisis that had been going on for the last few days came to an end after the vote on the no-confidence motion moved against Imran Khan on April 10, in which he was removed from the post of Prime Minister.

Nawaz Sharif's younger brother:

Shahbaz Sharif, nominated as the new Prime Minister of Pakistan, is the younger brother of three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Nawaz Sharif was disqualified as prime minister in 2017.

There were many contenders for the post of Prime Minister:

The session of the Pakistan National Assembly has begun. Opposition candidate and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) president Shahbaz Sharif and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf vice-president and former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi are in the race for the new prime minister's post.

8. Pramod Sawant Sworn in as Goa Chief Minister for the second time

Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) leader Pramod Sawant was sworn in for the second time as the Chief Minister of Goa on 28 March 2022.

He and 8 other ministers were  administered the oath of office and secrecy by the Goa Governor Mr.  PS Sreedharan Pillai  at the Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Stadium, Panaji.

The event was attended by Prime Minister Modi  and other top BJP leaders and Ministers.

Highlights 

  • Pramod Swant became the chief Minister of Goa in 2019 after the death of the incumbent Chief Minister Manhoar Parrikar.

  • He  won his  Sanquelim Assembly seat by defeating Dharmesh Saglani of the Congress party in the recently held Goa Legislative Assembly election in 2022. 

  • The election to constitute the 8th Goa Legislative Assembly was held on 14 February 2022.

  • BJP won 20 seats in the  40 member Goa Assembly . 

  • The party enjoys the support of three Independents and two Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) legislators. This is the third consecutive government of the BJP in the coastal state.  

  • Pramod Sawant is the 13 Person to become the Chief Minister of Goa.

9. Ritu Khanduri first woman speaker of Uttarakhand Assembly

Ritu Khanduri  Bhusan of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was unanimously elected as the first woman speaker of the fifth Uttarakhand legislative Assembly on 26 March 2022. 

Ritu Khanduri Bhushan who was elected from the Kotdwar constituency by defeating her Congress'  rival Surendra Singh Negi seat by a margin of 3,687 votes.

  • The first woman speaker of a state Legislative Assembly in India was Shanno Devi. She was the speaker of the Haryana State Legislative Assembly from 6 December 1966 to 17 March 1967. She was a member of the Congress party.

10. WHO Global centre for Traditional medicine in India

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has signed an agreement with the  government of India to set up a WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (GCTM) in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The Agreement was signed on 25 March 2022 in Geneva by the Secretary, Ministry of Ayush Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, and Director General, WHO Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

  • The Government of India will invest $250 million in the center .

  • The primary objective of GCTM is to harness the potential of traditional medicine from across the world through modern science and technology and improve overall health of the communities’ world over. 

  • The WHO centre will be under the Ministry of AYUSH. 

  • It is the only such centre on traditional medicine  of WHO in the world.

Traditional Medicine 

  • According to the WHO, Traditional medicine is the sum total of the knowledge, skill, and practices based on the theories, beliefs, and experiences indigenous to different cultures, used in the maintenance of health as well as in the prevention, diagnosis, improvement or treatment of physical and mental illness.

AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Homoeopathy)

  • The Ministry of AYUSH was set up on the 9th of November 2014 to revive  the knowledge of traditional Indian systems of medicine. 

  • It focuses on education and research in the fields of Ayurveda, Yoga Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy.

World Health Organisation (WHO)

  • The World Health Organisation is a specialised agency of the United Nations which was founded on 7 April, 1948.

  • Every year 7 April is celebrated as “World Health Day”.

  • Director General of WHO :  Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus  of Ethiopia .

  • He was elected as WHO director General  in 2017 and later re-elected in 2022 for a period of 5 years.
