Carlos Saura and Chiranjeevi honoured at the 53rd

Renowned Spanish film Director Carlos Saura and Telugu film superstar Chiranjeevi were honoured at the 53rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2022. The 53rd IFFI  which is being held in Panaji, Goa and was inaugurated by the Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting and Youth affairs & Sports Anurag Thakur on 20 November 2022.

The 53rd IFFI being held in Panaji from 20-28 November 2022 is being organised by National Film Development Corporation and Entertainment Society of Goa.

Satyajit Ray Lifetime Award 

Celebrated Spanish film Director Carlos Saura has been honoured with the prestigious Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement award. His daughter Anna Saura accepted the award on behalf of the eminent filmmaker . He has received the Golden Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival for Deprisa Deprisa, along with two Silver Bears for La caza and Peppermint Frappe, a BAFTA for Carmen and three awards at Cannes, among several others.

IFFI Indian Film Personality of the Year Award for 2022

Actor Producer Chiranjeevi Konidela has been chosen for the IFFI Indian Film Personality of the Year Award for 2022.  Chiranjeevi has starred in more than 150 feature films in Telugu, as well as some films in Hindi, Tamil and Kannada. 

He is regarded as one of the most successful and influential actors of Telugu cinema.

In 2006, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award, for his contributions to Indian cinema.

Waheeda Rahman, Rajinikanth, Ilaiyaraaja, S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, Amitabh Bachchan, Salim Khan, Biswajit Chatterjee, Hema Malini and Prasoon Joshi have been honoured with this award in the past.

2. MoS for Education Subhash Sarkar confers National Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar 2021-22

National Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar 2021-22

Minister of State for Education Dr Subhash Sarkar on 19 November, 2022 conferred National Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar 2021-22 in Akashwani Bhawan, Delhi.

Important facts

  • A total of 39 schools have been given this award, including five in the national category and 34 in the overall category.

  • The winners of the national category were given Rs 60,000 and the other categories were given Rs 20,000.

  • The National Commission Committee has selected these schools for the awards.

  • The Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar has been instituted by the Ministry of Education to recognize excellence in water, healthcare and sanitation in schools.

  • The awards were presented to rural and urban government schools, government aided schools and private schools.

  • Drinking water, toilets, handwashing with soap, operation and maintenance, capacity building and COVID-19 (preparedness and response) parameters have been used to measure the performance of schools.

  • In 2014, the Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya (SBSV) initiative was launched to ensure that all schools in India have access to separate functional toilets for boys and girls.

About National Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar

  • It has been established by the Ministry of Education to recognise, inspire and celebrate excellence in cleanliness and hygiene practices in schools.

  • The main objective of the award is to honour those schools which have taken steps to fulfil the requirement of Swachh Vidyalaya Abhiyan.

  • The award is based on IT-enabled assessment of WASH infrastructure, hygienic practices and COVID-19 appropriate behaviour.

3. India wins Excellence in Family Planning Leadership (EXCELL) Award-2022

India wins Excellence in Family Planning Leadership

India is the only country to have received the Leadership in Family Planning (EXCELL) Awards-2022 in the 'country category' at the International Conference on Family Planning held in Pattaya city, Thailand.

Important facts

  • India has made significant progress in adopting modern contraceptive methods, which have helped couples make choices about family planning.

  • These are reflected in the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) - 5 data.

  • As per NFHS-5 data, the total contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) in the country has increased from 54 per cent to 67 per cent as compared to NFHS-4.

  • Similarly, unmet needs for family planning showed a significant decline from 13 percent to 9 percent.

International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP)

  • It serves as a strategy for family planning and reproductive health worldwide.

  • It is the world’s largest scientific conference on family planning and reproductive health. 

  • The last conference was held in 2018 at Kigali, Rwanda.

  • After 2009, this conference organised every two years.

  • The first conference was held in Kampala, Uganda, in 2009.

  • It provides an opportunity to engage with civil society, youth organisations, academia, governments, businesses, cities, parliaments, trade unions to disseminate knowledge, celebrate successes and recognize progress made towards universal access to family planning systems, services and products.

The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced the National Sports awards 2022 on 14 November 2022.Table Tennis player Sharath Kamal Achanta has been selected for the country’s highest sports award   Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. 25 Sports persons will receive Arjuna Awards.

The awardees will receive their awards from the President of India at a specially organized function at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 30th November, 2022.

Indian Sports Award 

Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award 

  • It is the highest sporting award for a sports person in India. The Khel Ratna is awarded for outstanding performances in sports for over a period of four years.
  • It was earlier called as Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and its name was changed to Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2021.
  • The award was started in 1991 -92 and the first sportsperson to be awarded was the legendary Chess player Vishwanathan Anand.  
  • Pistol shooter Abhinav Bindra, who won the first-ever individual gold medal for India at the Olympics at Beijing 2008, is the youngest sportsperson to win the Khel Ratna. He was 18 years old when he got the award.
  • Karnam Malleswari was the first Indian woman to receive the Khel Ratna in 1994-95.

Arjuna Award 

It was instituted in 1961. It is given to sportspersons for consistent good performance over a period of four years. 

Hockey player Anna Lumsden was the first woman to win the Arjuna Award. She was conferred the prize in 1961.

Dronacharya Award for Coaches 

  • It is officially called the Dronacharya Award for Outstanding Coaches in Sports and Games, for coaches who help athletes achieve excellence over a period of four years.
  • The Dronacharya Award was first given in 1985, and the first Dronacharya Award winner was wrestling Coach Bhalchandra Bhaskar Bhagwat.
  • The first woman to win the Dronacharya award was athletics coach Renu Kohli in 2002.

Dronacharya Lifetime award 

  • It was instituted in 2011. 
  • It is given to coaches who have helped sportspersons achieve excellence over a period of 20 years or more.
  • The first recipient(s) of the Dronacharya (Lifetime) Award were athletics coach Kuntal Roy and hockey coach Rajinder Singh in 2011.

Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime achievement

It was instituted in 2002. It is given to a sports person for good performance and contribution towards the promotion of sports in an individual capacity. 

The first recipients of the Major Dhyan Chand Award were Olympian boxer Shahuraj Birajdar, Indian men’s hockey team player Ashok Diwan and Aparna Ghosh, an accomplished player and coach with the Indian women’s basketball team.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy

  • It is the oldest National Sports Awards in India which was instituted in 1956–1957.
  • The award is given to the University for Top Performance in inter-university tournaments over the last one year.
  • Bombay University was the first winner of the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy. 
  • Guru Nanak Dev University from Amritsar, Punjab has won it a record 23 times.

Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar 

 It was instituted in 2009 .It is awarded to organisations or corporates (both private and public) and individuals for playing a role in the area of sports promotion and development over the last three years.

Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 

It was set up in 1994 in the memory of Tenzing Norgay. He is an Indian of Nepali origin who along with a New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary scaled Mount Everest on 29 May 1953.

The award is given in adventure sports like mountaineering, skydiving, and open water swimming.

5. Google announces the winner of the Google for Doodle 2022 Contest

This year Google has declared Kolkata's Shlok Mukherjee as the winner of the Google for Doodle 2022 competition for his inspiring doodle titled 'India on the Center Stage' for India.

Important facts

  • Shloka's doodle - 'India on the Center Stage' - expresses hope for India's scientific progress to gain further momentum in the years to come.

  • The theme of the Doodle for Google contest 2022 was 'In the next 25 years, my India will be...'.

  • Sharing his doodle, Shlok wrote, "Indian scientists will succeed in developing indigenous eco-friendly robots for the betterment of humanity in the next 25 years".

  • India will travel regularly from earth to space. India will be stronger in the coming years with more development in Yoga and Ayurveda.

  • This year's contest received over 115,000 entries from children in classes 1 to 10 from over 100 cities across India.

  • Shloka's doodle will be shown on Google.co.in for 24 hours on November 14, 2022.

  • This year's Doodle for Google judging panel included actor, filmmaker, and TV artiste Neena Gupta.

  • The 20 finally selected doodles were displayed online for public voting. Apart from the national winner, 4 group winners were also selected.

Kerala gets the Responsible Tourism Global award

World Travel Mart (WTM) London Kerala’s sustainable and inclusive tourism project STREET has received the Responsible Tourism Global award the World Travel Mart (WTM) London in recognition of the water conservation initiatives successfully carried out as part of the community-oriented destination development plans.

The state bagged the award for the commendable work it carried out for ‘Conserving Water and Improving Water Security and Supply for Neighbours. ‘The award is for the water conservation initiative taken up under the STREET project, which is a first of its kind initiative in the world.

The STREET (Sustainable, Tangible, Responsible, Experiential, Ethnic Tourism) focuses on theme-based street development approaches at tourism destinations to reduce over concentration of activities at core centers, and maximize the local community benefit.

‘Water Street’ which has been successfully implemented at Maravanthuruthu Panchayat in Kottayam District near Kumarakom was especially mentioned by the jury for choosing STREET for the award.

7. National Fisheries Development Board receives "India Agribusiness Award 2022"

Dr. Sanjeev K Balyan, Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying presented the 'India Agribusiness Award 2022' to the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) on November 10, 2022.

8. Bihari Puraskar to Madhu Kankaria and Dr. Madhav Hada

Famous litterateurs Madhu Kankaria and Dr. Madhav Hada were awarded the 31st and 32nd Bihari Puraskar for 2021 and 2022 respectively in a program organised in Udaipur on 9 November.

Important facts

  • Prof. Indravardhan Trivedi, Vice Chancellor of Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur, the chief guest of the program presented two and a half lakh rupees, citation and emblem to the litterateurs.

  • The award was presented to Madhu Kankaria for his novel 'Hum Yahan The' and to Dr. Madhav Hada for his critical work 'Pacharang Chola Pahar Sakhi Re'.

  • Kankaria, a recipient of Bihari Puraskar 2021, has written many prose, poems and books. His novel 'Hum Yahan The' is based on the struggle of tribals in Jharkhand.

  • It also provides information about the culture, society and economic conditions of Kolkata.

  • Literary critic and academic Madhav Hada was awarded the Bihari Puraskar 2022 for his extensive work in literature, media, culture and history.

  • He has also been a member of the General Council of Sahitya Akademi and the Hindi Advisory Board.

About Bihari Puraskar

  • Bihari Puraskar is one of the three literary awards instituted by the KK Birla Foundation in 1991.

  • Named after the famous poet Bihari, the award for Rajasthani writers carries a cash prize of Rs 2.5 lakh, a plaque and a citation.

  • It is given every year for an outstanding work published in Hindi or Rajasthani by a Rajasthani writer.

  • The awardees are selected by a selection committee headed by Chairman Hemant Shesh.

On 7 November, 2022, the President of India presented the National Florence Nightingale Awards for the year 2021 to the Nursing professionals.

  • The award was conferred by the President to two nurses Shashikala Pandey and Ganga Joshi from Kumaon, Uttarakhand.

  • Shashikala Pandey, posted at BD Pandey Hospital in Nainital, has been given this honour for her dedication and selfless service towards patients.

  • Ganga Joshi has been given this award for her awareness program, special contribution to Covid-19, training of ASHA workers, participation in several trainings at the state and national level.

About the National Florence Nightingale Awards

10. Former Indian captain ‘Virat Kohli’ named as the ICC player of the month for October 2022

ICC Player of the Month for October 2022.

The International Cricket Council (ICC), on 7 November 2022 announced the winners of the ‘Players of the Month Awards’ for November 2022.

These awards rate the best performances in a particular month from both male and female cricketers across all forms of international cricket. 

Male cricketer of the Month 

Former Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli was named as the ICC Player of the Month for October 2022. 

He beat Sikandar Raza of Zimbabwe's and South Africa's David Miller for the award.

According to the ICC the  33-year-old Kohli  batted in only four innings in October but he played  out three memorable knocks, including a magical 82* against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup.

Pakistan’s all-rounder Nida Dar has been named as the ICC Women's Player of the Month thanks to her sensational form in the Women's Asia Cup 2022. 

India's Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma were also nominated for the award alongside Dar. 

International Cricket Council (ICC)

It is an international body which governs the men’s and women’s international cricket.

It was founded as the Imperial Cricket Conference in 1909 and was later converted into the International Cricket Conference in 1965.

In 1987 it was renamed as the International Cricket Council.

Members: 106 members.

There are two categories of members in ICC.

Full members: There are 12 full member countries which are qualified to play test matches. They are India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Australia, New Zealand, West Indies, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ireland and Afghanistan. 

Ireland and Afghanistan were granted full membership in 2017.

Associate members: There are 94 Associate members. They are not authorized to play test cricket but they do participate in other tournaments of ICC or at the regional level recognised by ICC.
