Denmark's Holger Rune defeated defending champion Novak Djokovic 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in a thrilling final of the Paris Masters on 6 November.

  • Rune took the decisive lead, leaving 35-year-old Serbian Djokovic behind. Rune stopped Djokovic from winning a record 39th Masters title.

  • The 19-year-old Rune, who is the former junior doubles partner of top-order Carlos Alcaraz, saved six break points in the match.

  • Rune became the youngest-ever Paris Masters champion since Boris Becker, who at the time was 18 years old, having won in 1986.

  • Rune's victory also ensured that he would be the first Danish player after nearly 50 years to be ranked in the top 10.

  • Meanwhile, Briton Neal Skupski and Wesley Koolhof, of the Netherlands, secured the season-ending number one spot in the doubles rankings after winning in Paris.

About Paris Masters

  • The Paris Masters is an annual tennis tournament for male professional players held in Paris, France.

  • The event is part of the ATP Tour Masters 1000 on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour.

  • It was held at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin until 1982. In 1989 it was upgraded to become one of the Grand Prix Tours (Grand Prix Super Series).

2. Kerala to host Track Asia Cup 2022

Kerala to host Track Asia Cup 2022

Track Asia Cup-2022, one of the premier cycling competitions, will be held at the LNCPE Outdoor Velodrome in Kerala from November 25 to 28.

Important facts

  • The event will see participation of over 200 cyclists from over 25 Asian countries and will be held outside Delhi for the first time in history.

  • It is authorised by the Asian Cycling Confederation and Cycling Federation of India. 

  • The Track Asia Cup is also used to select Asian countries for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

  • The highlight of the event will be the participation of cycling stalwarts from China, Japan, Korea and Kazakhstan.

  • Apart from these countries, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Indonesia will compete with India.

About Track Asia Cup 2022

  • It is a flagship event of the Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC).

  • It showcases excellent competitive cycling exhibitions across Asia.

  • Star cyclists including Olympic medalists will compete in various individual and team events.

  • Track Asia Cup 2022 will play a vital role in developing cycling as a major sporting event in the state.

  • This is probably the first time that a sporting event is being held in Kerala in which more than 20 countries are participating.

3. Western Air Command of IAF wins Air Force Lawn Tennis Championship

Air Force Lawn Tennis Championship

Western Air Command, Indian Air Force (IAF) won the Air Force Lawn Tennis Championship 2022-23 held at Head Quarter MC, Vayusena Nagar, Nagpur on 21 October. 

Important facts

  • The final match of the team championship was played between Western Air Command and Training Command in which Western Air Command emerged as the winner.

  • The Open Singles final was played between Corporal Pradeep of Training Command and Sergeant Manolin of Western Air Command and Corporal Pradeep emerged as the winner.

  • The championship was inaugurated by Air Marshal Vibhas Pandey, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Headquarters MC on 17 October 2022.

  • A total of eight teams comprising 48 players from seven commands of the Indian Air Force participated in the championship.

  • The championship was held in two events, the team championship and the open singles.

  • Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Air Marshal Vibhas Pandey was the chief guest during the closing ceremony of the championship on 21 October 2022.

4. Fifth Khelo India Youth Games 2022 to be held in Madhya Pradesh

Fifth Khelo India Youth Games

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Singh Thakur announced on 20 October 2022 that the fifth Khelo India Youth Games-2023 will be held in Madhya Pradesh.

Important facts

  • It will be held in eight different cities in the state.

  • The eight host cities named are Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Gwalior, Ujjain, Maheshwar, Mandla and Balaghat.

  • The games will be hosted from 31st January 2023 to 11th February 2023.

  • More than 8 thousand 500 athletes and sportspersons are expected to participate in this sporting event.

  • The fourth Khelo India Youth Games was organised from June 4 to 13 at Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula (Haryana), while some of its matches were also played in Chandigarh.

5. BCCI elects Roger Binny as the new President; to start women IPL

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has unanimously elected former Indian all-rounder Roger Binny as the 36th President of the BCCI at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the BCCI which was held in Mumbai on 18 October 2022. The BCCI also decided to start the women's IPL and not to participate in the Asia cricket cup to be held in Pakistan in 2023.

Roger Binny who represented Karnataka and India, played 27 Tests and 72 ODIs for India and was also a National selector. He will replace Saurav Ganguly whose three-year tenure as the board chief came to an end. 

Other Office Bearers of BCCI 

All the other office bearers of the BCCI were also elected unanimously including;

  • Jay Shah as Secretary ,
  • Rajeev Shukla as Vice-President.
  • Ashish Shelar  as Treasurer and
  • Devajit Saikia as Joint Secretary. 
  • Arun Dhumal was elected as the new Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman. He will replace Brijesh Patel. 

Women's IPL approved

The General Body also approved the inaugural Women's IPL which will consist of five teams and will be held in March 2023 just after the Women's T20 World Cup ends in South Africa on February 26.

India will not tour Pakistan for Asia Cup 2023.

The BCCI secretary Jay Shah who is also the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) announced that India will not be going to Pakistan next year to participate in the Asia cup.

India have not toured Pakistan since 2006 and have not played bilateral cricket against them since 2012 because of strained relations between the governments of the two countries. Their contests have taken place only at ICC and Asian events.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)

It is the governing body of men’s and women’s cricket in India. It selects the Indian team for International tours and for International Cricket Council (ICC) and Asian Cup tournaments.

The BCCI is an autonomous, private organisation and does not fall under the purview of the National Sports Federation of India. 

It was set up in 1928.

Grant Govan was the first President of the BCCI.

6. Jyoti Yaraji creates history in women's 100m hurdles, first Indian athlete to do so

Jyothi Yaraji set a new record by completing the women's 100m hurdles in less than 13 seconds at the National Open Athletics Championships in Bengaluru on October 17, 2022.

Important facts

  • Jyoti has become the first Indian female athlete to complete the 100m hurdles in less than 13 seconds.

  • Jyoti, representing the Railways, created a new national record by completing the race in 12.82 seconds.

  • Then the wind gauge was 0.9 metres per second so that she would not lose her national record for the second time.

  • She had completed the same event in the National Games in Gujarat in 12.79 seconds but then the wind gauge was high and her time was not recorded in the national record.

  • She had already achieved the meet mark in the heat with a time of 13.18s, breaking the record of 13.38s set by Anuradha Biswal in Chennai 20 years ago.

  • Jyothi Yaraji was born on August 28, 1999 in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh.

  • He made his international debut on 10 May 2022 at the Cyprus International Athletics Meet in Limassol.

  • Jyoti Yaraji eventually set the national record for the women's 100m hurdles with a timing of 13.23s.

7. India defeated South Africa in the final ODI to win the series 2–1

India beat South Africa by 7 wickets in the third and final One Day International cricket match on 11 October in Delhi to register a 2–1 win in the 3-match ODI series.

8. ISSF World Championship Shotgun: India finish fifth with one gold

At the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championships in Shotgun, India finished fifth with one gold, one silver and two bronze medals in Osijek, Croatia.

  • Shotgun powerhouses Italy, Great Britain and the USA finished the top three.

  • China prevailing over India on the medal tally by virtue of winning a silver more, both the Asian giants had the same medal haul.

  • The United States won the gold medal in the women's skeet team event on the final day of 12 October, with Indian trio Maheshwari Chauhan, Darshana Rahore and Raija Dhillon finishing 10th in the qualification.

  • In the men's skeet team, India's Gurjot Khangura, Mairaj Ahmed Khan and Anant Jeet Singh Naruka were placed ninth out of 22 teams.

  • The ISSF World Championships has now shifted to Cairo, Egypt for the rifle and pistol leg.

9. Anurag Thakur inaugurates Water Sports Centre in Himachal Pradesh

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Singh Thakur has inaugurated a Water Sports Centre in Koldam Barmana, Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh on 9 October.

  • The water sports centre, a first of its kind in Himachal Pradesh, has been jointly started by Sports Authority of India (SAI) and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC).

  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also exchanged between SAI and NTPC during the event.

  • It has been jointly initiated by Sports Authority of India (SAI) and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC).

  • The centre will be dedicated to training athletes in water sports such as rowing, canoeing and kayaking.

  • The centre will select 40 players who will take part in rowing, kayaking and canoeing. The centre is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and will also provide hostel and training facilities to boys and girls.

10. Harmanpreet, Rizwan win ICC Player of the Month awards for September

India women's cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Pakistan wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan won the ICC Player of the Month awards for September-2022 in the women's and men's categories.

  • Harmanpreet Kaur became India's first ever winner of the ICC Women's Player of the Month due to her leading role in her team's first ODI series win in England since 1999.

  • She performed brilliantly during the ODI series, scoring 221 runs in three matches, maintaining a strike rate of 103.47 and getting dismissed only once.

  • The women cricketers selected for the Women's Cricket Award included Bangladesh's Nigar Sultana and India's captains Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana.

  • The ICC Men's Player of the Month nominees included Australia's Cameron Green and India's Axar Patel, but Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan managed to bag the ICC Men's Player of the Month award for the first time.
