Tags: Latest Popular

Cinematograph-Amendment-Bill-2023-introduced-in-Rajya-SabhaUnion Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur introduced the Cinematograph Amendment Bill 2023 in the Rajya Sabha to deal with film piracy.

An Overview of the News

  • The primary objective of the Cinematograph Amendment Bill is to tackle film piracy, which has been a significant concern for the Indian film industry.

  • A report by Ernst & Young states that the Indian film industry suffered a huge loss of around Rs 18,000 crore in 2019 due to piracy.

  • In response to alarming piracy rates, the Indian government took action by proposing amendments to the existing Cinematograph Bill 1952.

  • The Cinematograph Bill 1952 is responsible for overseeing the certification and exhibition of films in India.

  • The proposed amendments are aimed at strengthening the regulatory framework and enhancing measures against film piracy.

About Piracy

It is the unauthorized copying, distribution or exhibition of films without the consent of the rights holders, which poses a significant challenge by affecting the revenue and overall quality of the Indian film industry.

Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill 2023:

  • The Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill 2023 was introduced to effectively deal with the issue of piracy.

  • One of the key provisions of the Bill is to reclassify films on the basis of age groups instead of the existing system of 'U', 'A' or 'UA'. The proposed classification includes "UA-7+", "UA-13+" and "UA-16+", replacing the existing "UA-12" category.

  • The main objective behind the recategorization is to establish consistency in categorizing movies and content across different platforms.

  • The Bill, once enacted, would recognize theft as a legal offence, leading to stricter punishment for those responsible. Punishment for piracy will now include three years' imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10 lakh.

Indian Cinematograph Bill 1952:

  • The Indian Cinematograph Bill of 1952 established censor boards in various cities, which were later reorganized as the Central Board of Film Censors and renamed the Central Board of Film Certification in 1983.

  • The primary objective of the Cinematograph Bill 1952 is to provide for a certification procedure for cinematograph films intended for public exhibition and to regulate such exhibitions.

  • The Cinematograph Bill 1952 also included the screening of film titles. Titles depicting excessive violence, obscene language, obscenity, contempt of court, insult to national symbols, or misrepresentation of personality or religion are prohibited.

An Overview of the News

  • Around 2,200 candidates from six districts of Jammu and Kashmir received training in Namda art, thereby preserving this traditional craft and empowering local weavers and artisans.

  • The project demonstrates a successful Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model in skill development in collaboration with local industry partners.

  • The initiative was implemented in collaboration with Meer Handicrafts and the Srinagar Carpet Training and Market Centre, demonstrating the power of public-private partnerships in promoting skill development and attracting investments for economic development.

  • The project was launched following Union Minister Rajiv Chandrashekhar's visit to Jammu and Kashmir in 2021, where the need to preserve and revive the vanishing traditional crafts of the region was recognised.

  • The Namda craft involves making rugs from sheep's wool through felting techniques instead of traditional weaving.

About Namda Crafts

  • The credit for introducing Namda to the Kashmiri people is given to a Sufi saint named Shah-i-Hamdan.

  • Namda is a traditional Kashmiri craft that involves making felted carpets using sheep's wool and incorporating colourful hand embroidery.

  • Unlike traditional woven carpets, Namda is made through a felting process, where the wool fibres are tangled together instead of being woven.

  • The uniqueness of Namda lies in its intricate themes and floral patterns, which are inspired by nature.

  • The designs often feature flowers, leaves, buds and fruits, making for a visually appealing motif.

  • Namda art is not limited to Kashmir only but is also practised in many other Asian countries including Iran, Afghanistan and India.

6. IPL 2023 Schedule, Match Result, Time Table, Match List

Tags: Sports National Latest Popular

The Indian Premier League (IPL), alternatively known as the TATA IPL due to sponsorship arrangements, is a prestigious annual cricket tournament featuring ten city-based franchise teams battling it out in the thrilling Twenty20 (T20) format. The league, which was inaugurated in 2007, was the brainchild of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and has since established itself as a global sporting spectacle.

Typically, the IPL is held during the summer months between March and May each year, and the competition enjoys a unique window in the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Future Tours Programme. This exclusive scheduling means that international cricket tours are less likely to occur during the IPL seasons, which allows the league to attract top talent from across the globe.

The IPL's format has been a massive hit with fans and players alike, with its fast-paced, high-octane action, and electrifying atmosphere setting the standard for T20 cricket worldwide. As a result, the IPL has become an essential part of the global cricketing calendar, attracting millions of viewers every year and providing a platform for new talent to showcase their skills on the world stage.

IPL Foundation

On 13 September 2007, in the wake of India's triumphant performance at the 2007 T20 World Cup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made an announcement that set the cricketing world abuzz. The BCCI declared that a franchise-based Twenty20 cricket competition christened the Indian Premier League, would soon be launched. The IPL was slated to commence its inaugural season in April 2008 amidst great fanfare at a grand ceremony in the capital city of New Delhi.

Lalit Modi, the BCCI vice-president and chief architect of the IPL, revealed the tournament's format, prize money, franchise revenue system, and squad composition rules. He also divulged that a seven-member governing council, consisting of former India players and BCCI officials, would oversee the IPL's functioning. Furthermore, the top two teams in the IPL would earn a coveted spot in that year's Champions League Twenty20, adding to the tournament's prestige and allure. The IPL was thus poised to revolutionize the cricketing landscape with its innovative and glamorous approach.

10. Karnataka NEP referred 'Pythagoras Theorem' as fake news

Tags: Popular State News

Pythagoras Theorem as Fake News

A position paper on National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 by the Government of Karnataka has described Pythagoras' theorem as "fake news".

Important facts

  • The Pythagorean theorem has been disputed in many international forums. Pythagoras claimed this to be his theory.

  • The Karnataka NEP mentions a text called the Baudhayana Sulbasutra, in which the specific verse refers to the theorem.

About Pythagoras

  • Based on evidence, the existence of the Greek philosopher Pythagoras is believed to be around 570–490 BC.

  • However, it is believed that mysterious elements were present around him, because of the secretive nature of the school/society he founded in Italy.

  • Relatively little is known about his mathematical achievements, as no evidence exists of his own writing today.

What is Pythagoras Theorem?

  • The Pythagorean theorem describes the relationship between the three sides of a right triangle (one of which is 90°).

  • Its Equation is a² + b² = c²

  • where a and b are the two perpendicular sides, and c is the length of the diagonal side.

  • If any two sides of a right triangle are known, the theorem helps you calculate the third side.

Reasons why Vedic mathematicians knew this before Pythagoras?

  • There are several references in the Sulbasutra, which are written by Vedic Indians and refer to the rituals performed during yaganas.

  • The oldest of these is the Baudhayana Sulbasutra.

  • The period of Baudhayana Sulbasutra is not certain. It is inferred on the basis of linguistic and other secondary historical considerations.

  • In more recent literature, the Baudhayana Sulbasutra is taken from around 800 BCE.

  • There is a statement in the Baudhayana Sulbasutra called the Pythagorean theorem (this was known as a geometric fact, not a 'theorem').

  • Yagya rituals included the construction of altars (altars) and fire pits (fire) in various shapes such as isosceles triangles, symmetrical trapezia and rectangles.

  • The Sulabasutras describe the effort towards producing the prescribed shape of these figures.

How did the Knowledge of Equation Evolve?

  • The earliest evidence is from the Old Babylonian civilization (1900–1600 BC). They referred to this as the diagonal rule.

  • The earliest evidence comes from the later period of the Sulbasutras.

  • The oldest surviving axiomatic proof of the theorem is in Euclid's Elements from about 300 BC.
