PM Modi to participate in Constitution Day

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will participate in the Constitution Day celebrations in the Supreme Court on 26th November, 2022.  The day has been celebrated as Constitution Day since 2015, to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949.

During the programme, the Prime Minister will launch Virtual Justice Clock, JustIS mobile App 2.0, Digital court and S3WaaS Websites.

Virtual Justice Clock is an initiative to exhibit vital statistics of the justice delivery system at the Court level giving the details of the cases instituted, cases disposed and pendency of cases on day/week/month basis at the Court level. Public can access the Virtual Justice Clock of any court establishment on the District Court’s website.

JustIS Mobile App 2.0 is a tool available to judicial officers for effective court and case management by monitoring pendency and disposal of not only his court but also for individual judges working under them. This App is also made available to High Court and Supreme Court Judges who can now monitor pendency and disposal of all the States and Districts under their jurisdiction.

Digital court is an initiative to make the court records available to the judge in digitized form to enable the transition to Paperless Courts. 

S3WaaS Websites is a framework to generate, configure, deploy and manage websites for publishing specified information and services related to district judiciary.  S3WaaS is a cloud service developed for government entities to generate Secure, Scalable & Sugamya (Accessible) websites. It is multilingual, citizen friendly and divyang friendly.

2. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi invited to be the chief guest of the Republic day 2023

The Indian government has invited Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi as the chief guest for the Republic day parade 2022. He will be the first Egyptian leader to be hosted by India for the Republic Day celebrations. Abdel Fattah Sisi is a former Army officer who was elected as the president of Egypt t in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018.The last foreign chief guest was the Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro in 2020.

About Republic Day Celebration 

Every year Republic day is observed on 26 January. It was on this day the constitution of India was promulgated in 1950 and India became a republic.

The President of India presides over the Republic day functions. It is customary to invite a foreign country leader as an honoured guest at the Republic day function.

Some important facts to remember:

Duration of the Republic day celebration 

Earlier, the Republic day celebration started on 24 January and ended on 29 January.  However from this year (2022) the government has decided to start the Republic day celebration from 23 January and end on 30 January. 

23 January is celebrated as Parakram Diwas to mark the birth anniversary of Subhash Chandra Bose and 30 January is the Martyr's day to mark the assassination of Gandhiji. 

Place of the Republic day celebration 

Between 1950 and 1954, Republic Day celebrations were organized at different venues like Irwin Stadium, Kingsway, Red Fort and Ramlila Grounds in Delhi. 

In 1955 Rajpath (Now Kartavya Path) became the permanent place for the Republic day parade. 

The chief Guest was the Governor-General of Pakistan Malik Ghulam Muhammad.

President of Indonesia, Sukarno was the first guest at 1950 Republic day parade.

Chief Guest of the Republic Day parade 

The first chief guest of the Republic day parade was the former President of Indonesia Sukarno in 1950.

Only once has an American President been the chief guest at the Republic day parade. The first black President of the United States Barack Obama was the chief guest at the 2015 Republic day parade.

The first women chief guest was Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom in 1961. 

Two Nobel Prize winners have been the chief guest of the Republic day parade. The first black President of South Africa, Nelson Mandel was the chief guest at the 1995 Republic day function. He won the Nobel peace prize in 1993.

The other Nobel Prize winner who was a chief guest at Republic day was Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar who won the Nobel peace prize in 1991.

There were no foreign chief guests in the years 1952, 1953, 1966, 2021, 2022 due to various reason.

The Republic day function is organized by the Union Ministry of Defence.

3. Former ISI chief Asim Munir appointed new chief of Pakistan Army

 Lt Gen Asim Munir appointed new chief of the Pakistan Army

Former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency chief Lt Gen Asim Munir has been appointed as the new chief of the Pakistan Army on 24 November by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, succeeding Gen Qamar Bajwa.

Important facts

  • He replaced outgoing General Qamar Javed Bajwa on 29 November.

  • Bajwa was appointed army chief in 2016 for three years. In the year 2019, he was given a three-year extension.

  • Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote to President Alvi to appoint Lt. Gen. Munir as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).

  • With the approval of Munir's name by the President, the process of appointment was completed.

  • Lt Gen Munir has served as the chief of the two most powerful intelligence agencies Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI).

  • However, his tenure as ISI chief was the shortest ever and within eight months he was replaced by Lt Gen Faiz Hameed in 2019 at the behest of the then Prime Minister Imran Khan.

  • The CJCSC is the highest authority in the hierarchy of the armed forces, but major powers, including deployment, appointments and transfers of troops, rest with the Chief of Army Staff. Because of these powers, the army chief is the most powerful.

  • Pakistan has been in existence for more than 75 years and the country has been under military rule for more than half of that time. In such a situation, the army has been interfering a lot in the security and foreign policy matters of the country.

4. Anwar Ibrahim sworn in as the country's new prime minister in Malaysia

Malaysia's opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was sworn in as the country's tenth Prime Minister on 24 November.

Important facts

  • The new leader was appointed by King Al-Sultan Abdullah.

  • With this, the political uncertainty that continued for several days after the general elections with a fractured mandate in Malaysia has come to an end. Anwar took oath in a simple ceremony at the National Palace.

  • Anwar's Alliance of Hope won the election with 82 seats but fell short of the 112 seats needed for a majority.

  • Former Prime Minister Muhyiddin's Malay-centric Perikatan Nasional (National Alliance) managed to win 72 seats due to unprecedented support from the Malay community in the election.

  • The Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party emerged as the largest party in the coalition, winning 49 seats.

  • The coalition led by the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), which won 30 seats in the election, agreed to support the coalition led by Anwar.

Prime Minister and President of the Nepali Congress Sher Bahadur Deuba on 23 November was elected for the consecutive 7th time from the home district of Dhankuta.

  • The counting of votes continues for parliamentary and provincial elections in the country. 

  • Senior Nepali Congress leader Deuba defeated an independent candidate Sagar Dhakal by a margin of over 12 thousand votes.

  • The parliamentary and provincial elections were held on 20th of November in Nepal. 

  • It was the second general election since the promulgation of the constitution in 2015.

  • The first round of elections held in 2017 did not live up to the expectations of Nepalese voters as the government did not last long.

6. India’s Purnima Devi Barman honoured with U.N.’s highest environmental award

Assam's wildlife biologist Purnima Devi Barman has been awarded the United Nation's highest environmental honour, 'Champions of the Earth', for 2022.

  • Barman has been given this honour for his transformative action to prevent degradation of ecosystems.

  • Barman has been honoured in the Entrepreneurial Vision category of this year's Champions of the Earth award by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

  • She is the founder of the Hargila Army and senior project manager of the Avifauna Research and Conservation Division, Aaranyak.

  • She is an Indian wildlife biologist working in Assam to protect the stork.

  • She leads the Hargila Army, a movement dedicated to saving the stork from extinction, consisting only of women.

  • As part of this movement, women make and sell stork-like masks, helping to raise awareness about endangered species as well as their financial independence.

  • Her love for birds was born when she was sent to live with his grandparents on the banks of the Brahmaputra River in Assam at the age of five.

  • There she saw storks and many other species which made her fall in love with birds.

Greater Adjutant Stork

  • The greater adjutant stork is the second-rarest stork species in the world.

  • Due to the destruction of natural habitat, their population is currently reduced to 1,200, which is less than 1 percent of the number a century ago.

  • Rural areas are becoming increasingly urbanised, and the wetlands where storks thrive have dried up and become polluted, replaced by buildings, roads and mobile phone towers.

The three-day celebrations on the 400th birth anniversary of the great Ahom general Lachit Barphukan began in New Delhi on November 23, 2022.

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated an exhibition on the occasion at Vigyan Bhavan.

  • Union Law Minister Kiren Rijijju attended the cultural event as the Chief Guest. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the closing ceremony on 25 November.

  • A documentary and a coffee table book on the life and glory of Lachit Barphukan were inaugurated in New Delhi during the event.

  • The Assam government is organising a week-long program to mark the birth anniversary of Lachit Barphukan.

Who was Lachit Barphukan? 

  • Lachit Barphukan was a famous general of the great Ahom army that defeated the Mughals and checked the growing ambitions of Aurangzeb in the late 17th century.

  • The Ahoms, who ruled Assam for more than 600 years, hold the record for the longest reign in the world.

  • He is best known for leading the Battle of Saraighat on the Brahmaputra in 1671, repulsing an attempt by a Mughal army led by Raja Ramsingh-I to reconquer Assam.

S.Jaishankar met UAE foreign minister

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met the visiting foreign minister of United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan in New Delhi on 22 November 2022.  Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan is on two days (21 and 22 November) visit to India.

Both the leaders discussed bilateral and regional and global issues. The meeting was also attended by Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra and UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem Al Hashimy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the UAE on June 28 and met Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Jaishankar visited the UAE from October31- September 2 to co-chair a Joint Commission Meeting and the Strategic Dialogue with Sheikh Abdullah.

The UAE is a key energy supplier and one of India’s most important strategic partners in West Asia. The UAE is also home to more than three million Indians, one of the largest concentrations of expatriates in the region.

9. Assam government to organise a 3 day Lachit divas in New Delhi

3 day Lachit divas in New Delhi

The Assam government will organize Lachit Divas in New Delhi from 23-25th of November 2022. Lachit Divas is observed in Assam on 24th of November every year as a tribute to the Ahom General Lachit Borphukan who defeated a large Mughal Army on the banks of Brahmaputra in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671 to defend Guwahati. He was born on 24 November.

The 400th Birth Anniversary of great warrior of Ahom Dynasty Lachit Borphukan will be held with a grand programme with an exhibition on 600-year-old history of Ahom dynasty at Vigyan Bhawan.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will inaugurate the exhibition on November 23 with Union Home Minister Amit Shah gracing the occasion as chief guest on November 24.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the function of the 400th birth anniversary of Ahom General Lachit Borphukan in the national capital on November 25.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju will inaugurate a cultural program at Sunder Park on November 23.

In order to popularize Assamese culture the government of Assam has decided to organise Lachit divas in various parts of the country starting this year in New Delhi.

10. Former Indian football captain Babu Mani dies aged 59

 Babu Mani dies aged 59

Former Indian football captain Babu Mani, who was an integral part of the Indian football team in the 1980s, died after a prolonged battle with liver-related issues. He was 59.

Babu Mani made his India debut against Argentina in Kolkata during the 1984 Nehru Cup and went on to play 55 matches for the country. He was also a part of the first Indian squad to qualify for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup in 1984 and went on to play in the tournament in Singapore.

Mani was also a member of the Indian team which won gold medals at the 1985 and 1987 editions of the South Asian Games.

Babu Mani, also part of the Bengal Team which won Santosh Trophy in 1986 and 1988.

He also played for and won various domestic football cups like Federation Cup, IFA shield, Durand Cup, Rovers Cup trophies for Kolkata's top three clubs, Mohammedan Sporting, Mohan Bagan and East Bengal.
