1. Arjun Maini claims second position at Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe

India’s Mercedes-AMG driver Arjun Maini claimed the second position at the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe at Hockenheim, Germany on 5 September 2022. 

GT World Challenge is a very competitive platform for GT3 motor car racing in Europe.

The Bangalore-based driver, Arjun Maini along with Hubert Haupt and Florian Scholze of team HRT finished at the 2nd position in the gold class.

This was the second podium finish for them, and they are currently placed fourth in the Championship.

2. Mary Elizabeth Truss to be the new Prime Minister of United Kingdom

Mary Elizabeth Truss or Liz Truss has been chosen as the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK) by her Conservative party on 5 September 2022. She is the third women Prime minister of the UK after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May. She will be the 56th Prime Minister of  the United Kingdom.

The ruling conservative party also known as Tories voted to elect their leader after the current Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his resignation in July after months of scandal.

Liz Truss who was serving as the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs since 2021 defeated Rishi Sunak by getting 57% of the valid votes cast. She got 81,326 votes while Sunak got 60,399.

Rishi Sunak, former finance minister in the Boris Johnson government, is a person of Indian origin and married to the daughter of Infosys founder N. R. Narayana Murthy. 

Boris Johnson will travel to Scotland to meet Queen Elizabeth on 6 September to officially tender his resignation. Truss will follow him and be asked to form a government by the monarch Queen Elizabeth II.

Truss will become the Conservatives' fourth prime minister since a 2015 election.

Truss takes over as the country faces a cost of living crisis, industrial unrest, a recession and war in Europe, where Britain has been a leading backer of Ukraine.

3. Amit Shah unveils, ‘Savaj’ , mascot for the 36th National Games

Union Minister for Home Affairs and Cooperatives Amit Shah unveiled the Logo and Mascot of the 36th National Games at the EKA Arena TransStadia in Ahmedabad on 4 September 2022.

  • The mascot is named as Savaj which means cub in Gujarati. It is a lion cub. 
  • The theme of the anthem is Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.
  • The theme of the 36th National Games is ’Sports for Unity.'

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other distinguished guests were present.

36th National Games :

  • The National Games will see a total of 36 sports and participation from all 28 states and eight Union Territories.
  • Yogasana and Mallakhamba sports will be introduced for the first time in the National Games.
  • The Games will take place in six cities of Gujarat -- Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and Bhavnagar.
  • In the previous edition in Kerala in 2015, there were 33 sports.
  • The Games are happening after a gap of five years.
  • Goa was to hold this edition of the Games but multiple delays, mainly due to infrastructure-related issues, led to postponement several times.
  • Services Sports Promotion Board topped the medal charts in each of the three previous editions.

4. Former chairman of Tata Sons, Cyrus Mistry killed in road accident in Maharashtra

Cyrus Mistry, who succeeded Ratan Tata as chairman of Tata Sons but was later unceremoniously ousted, was killed in a car accident in Maharashtra's Palghar on 4 September 2022. He was 54.

He was travelling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai in a Mercedes car.

His father, Shapoorji Pallonji Mistry recently died at the age of 93.  The Shapoorji Pallonji Group has built luxury hotels, stadiums, palaces and factories across Asia.

5. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul creates a world record in International T-20

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul created a new world record in the international T 20 matches. Their opening partnership of 54 runs in 5.1 overs against Pakistan in the Asia cup was the 14th 50 plus partnership. 

They broke the record held by Ireland’s pair of Paul Stirling and  Kevin O’Brien of 13 such partnerships.

The match is being played at the Dubai international Cricket Stadium, United Arab Emirates. 

India has scored 181 for 7 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Pakistan are batting.

6. Kerala Health Minister rejected the Ramon Magsaysay Award as it was against the communists

Former Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja has rejected the Ramon Magsaysay award for her commitment and service towards ensuring an accessible public health system and effectively leading from the front to manage the Nipah and Covid-19 outbreaks in the state. However after she declined it the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation decided not to announce her name in the final list. 

  • Her handling of the health crisis was praised nationally and internationally.
  • KK Shailaja who is a central committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) said that the party decided not to accept the award.
  • She said that cannot accept the award as it was given to an individual while her work as a health minister was a collective work.
  • Also the award which is given in the name of the former Philippines President, was anti-communist and ruthlessly crushed the communist guerrilla movement in the country.
  • If she had accepted the award she would be the fifth Keralite to get the honour after Verghese Kurien, M S Swaminathan, B G Verghese and T N Seshan. 
  • Till date 55 Indians have won the award. First being Vinoba Bhave in 1958 and the last being Ravish Kumar 2019.

7. Barack Obama : President, Nobel laureate, and now an Emmy winner

The Television Academy on September 3 honoured Hollywood newcomer Barack Obama with an Emmy Award for his narration of his Netflix documentary series "Our Great National Parks".

  • Former US President Obama has already won Grammy Awards for audio versions of his memoirs "The Audacity of Hope" and "Dreams from My Father".
  • Barack Obama, one of the world's popular leaders, who has been two-time President of America, has also received the Nobel Peace Prize.

  • He has also received the Grammy, the biggest award in the music world, twice.

  • This time he has also got an Emmy, the most prestigious award in the television world.

  • Out of the four prestigious awards in the world of entertainment, two awards Oscar and Tony are yet to be received.

  • These four awards are called EGOT, which means achievement of having won all four of the major American entertainment awards.

  • If he wins two more awards, he will join the EGOT club.

  • Before this, another US President, D. Eisenhower, received an Emmy in 1956.

8. Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik Honoured with Capital Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik was conferred with the Capital Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was presented by former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice N.V. Ramana at India International Centre, New Delhi, on September 4, 2022

Naveen Patnaik of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) party has been the chief minister of Odisha since 5 March 2000 - till date.

The foundation in a statement said that in recognition of his distinctive and outstanding leadership qualities Naveen Patnaik is being conferred Capital Foundation Lifetime Achievement. 

The Capital Foundation Society, established in 1987 is one of the most prestigious voluntary organisations in India which has been engaged in providing a platform for policy dialogue and debate on issues of national and international importance.

Odisha State :

9. Yamuna Kumar Chaubey gets charge of NHPC chairman and managing director

Yamuna Kumar Choubey has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director of state-owned hydroelectric power company NHPC for a period of three months.

IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • Abhay Kumar Singh retired as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the company on August 31, 2022.
  • Choubey has been appointed for a period of three months with effect from September 1, 2022, or till regular appointment to the post, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

  • Choubey, 59, is a civil engineering graduate from IIT Kharagpur.

  • He joined NHPC Limited in 1985 as Probationary Executive (Civil) in the 540 MW Chamera Hydro-Electric Project.

  • Presently he is Director (Technical) in NHPC and also holding additional charge of Director (Personnel), NHPC.

  • He has experience in all aspects of hydropower project development and has contributed to the development of NHPC.

10. Supreme Court judge DY Chandrachud nominated executive chairman of National Legal Services Authority

The President of India Droupadi Murmu has nominated Supreme Court judge Justice DY Chandrachud as the next executive chairperson of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • Chief Justice of India UU Lalit was the former working chairman of NALSA.
  • After the retirement of Chief Justice of India U U Lalit, Justice Chandrachud will take over as the 50th Chief Justice of India from November 2022.

  • Justice DY Chandrachud, a Supreme Court judge, has been a former Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and a former judge of the Bombay High Court.

  • Born in 1959, Justice DY Chandrachud was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of India on 13 May 2016.

  • He holds an LLB degree from Campus Law Center, University of Delhi, LLM from Harvard Law School, USA and a doctorate in Judicial Science.

National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) :

  • It was established in 1995 under the Legal Services Authority Act, 1987.

  • It works to monitor and review the effectiveness of programs and develop rules and principles for providing legal services under the Act.

  • It distributes funds to state legal services authorities and non-profit organizations to help them execute legal aid systems and initiatives.
