Assam had earlier expressed its intention to ban polyethylene terephthalate (PET) water bottles of less than 1000 ml.
Formal implementation took place through a firm notification issued by the Assam Environment and Forest Department on 23 August.
The ban covers various aspects including the manufacture, import, storage, distribution, and sale of plastic water bottles falling under the specified capacity.
