Every year, November 25 is seen as International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. 

Important facts

  • The main purpose of organizing this day is to prevent violence against women and to make women aware of their basic human rights and gender equality.

  • This day is organised by women's rights activists every year since 1981 on 25 November to fight against gender-based violence.

  • The theme for this year is ‘UNITE! Activism to end violence against women and girls.

  • The principle of gender equality in India is enshrined in the Indian Constitution, with women having the fundamental right not to be discriminated against on grounds of sex (Article 15) and equal protection before the law (Article 14).

Background of the day

  • On February 7, 2000, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution designating November 25 as the 'International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women'.

  • The day is organised in honour of the 'Mirabai sisters' (three political activists of the Dominican Republic) who were brutally executed in the year 1960 on the orders of the country's ruler 'Rafael Trujillo'.
