Norovirus cases have been reported for the first time in India from Kerala.
Norovirus:
Norovirus causes inflammation of the stomach or intestines. This is called acute gastroenteritis. A person usually develops symptoms 12 to 48 hours after being exposed to norovirus.
However, most people with norovirus illness get better within 1 to 3 days.
Spread easily:
- People infected with Norovirus can shed billions of norovirus particles in the environment through feces or vomit and only a few virus particles can make other people sick.
Transmission:
- Having direct contact with the infected person.
- Consuming contaminated food or water.
- Touching contaminated surfaces
- Infection usually occurs in closed and crowded environments.
Symptoms:
The most common symptoms of Norovirus are
- Diarrohea
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Stomach Pain
Along with other symptoms like: fever, body ache and headache.
Its other name
- Norovirus was originally called the “Norwalk virus”. It is named after the town Norwalk, in the Ohio state of the United States where it was first detected in 1972.
- Although norovirus can strike year-round, it’s more common in the winter, that’s why it is sometimes called “winter vomiting bug.”
- Noroviruses also are “sometimes called food poisoning”, because they can be transmitted through contaminated food or water.
