1. Qatar to host the 18th AFC Asian Cup 2023 in place of China

The Asian Football Confederation executive committee in its meeting on 17 October 2022 has confirmed that Qatar will host the 18th Asian Cup 2023 in place of the tournament's original hosts, China. Earlier this year China expressed its inability to host the Asian Cup due to its strict Zero covid policy which has seen total lockdown in parts of China.

The continental championships were awarded to China in 2019 and were scheduled to take place in 10 Chinese cities from June 16 -July 16 next year.

Qatar beat Indonesia and South Korea to win the right to host the 2023 Asian football cup.

Qatar is also holding the FIFA men’s football world cup 2022 to be played in the month of November -December 2022.

Qatar are the reigning AFC Asian Cup champions and will be hosting the continent's most prestigious men's tournament for the third time after staging the 1988 and 2011 editions.

India, Saudi Arabia shortlisted as potential host for AFC Asian Cup 2027 

At the meeting, All India Football Federation and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation were shortlisted as the potential host of the 2027 AFC Asian cup. 

The final decision will be taken in the next meeting of the executive council of the AFC to be held in February 2023.

AFC Asian Cup

The first AFC Asian cup was held in 1956 in Hong Kong. It is held every four years.

After the 2004 Asian cup the AFC decided to hold the next Asian cup in 2007.

The 17th Asian Cup was held in UAE in 2019 and it was won by Qatar.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is the governing body of Asian football and one of the six Confederations making up FIFA.

 It was formed in 1954 in Manila, Philippines and at present 47 countries are its member.

2. Maharashtra wins men and women’s team won the 2nd Goalball National Championship

Maharashtra’s men and women’s team won the 2nd Goalball National Championship held at Maharishi Dayanand University Rohtak, Haryana.  In both the men’s and women’s final played at Rohtak on 16 October 2022, the Maharashtra team defeated the Uttarakhand men and women’s team.

The 3 day (14-16 October) 2nd Goalball National championship 2022 was organised by the Goalball federation of India in Rohtak and saw the participation of 10 teams .

Goalball is a Paralympic sport which is played by blind sportspeople.

3. Harshada Garud sole Indian medal winner at the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2022

Junior world champion Harshada Garud was India’s sole medallist among the 12-member Indian contingent at the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2022 tournament which concluded on 16 October 2022 at Manama, Bahrain.

She won the bronze medals in the snatch section and the overall section of the women’s 45kg category. This was Harshada Garud’s first international medal at the senior level.

The Asian Weightlifting Championships was organized by the Asian Weightlifting Federation at Manama, Bahrain from 6 to 16 October 2022.

Asian Weightlifting Federation 

It was set up in 1958 in Tokyo, Japan.

It governs the weightlifting sports in Asia.

4. Avinash Sable wins the Indian Elite race at the Delhi Half Marathon 2022 in a photo finish

The Birmingham Commonwealth Games men’s 3000m steeplechase silver medal winner Avinash Sable, won the Indian elite race at the Delhi Half Marathon 2022 on 16 October 2022, beating Kartik Kumar by a margin of 0.04 seconds. Both Sable and Kartik clocked 1:04:00 seconds. Avinash Sable was eventually declared the winner by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) technical officials after reviewing the footage.

Avinash Sable also won the last Delhi half marathon held in 2020. The distance in the Delhi half marathon is 21.097 Kilometers, while in the normal marathon the distance is 42.195 Kilometers.

In the Indian women’s elite race, Sanjivani Jadhav bagged the crown with a timing of 1:17:53.

Ethiopia’s Chala Regasa and Kenya’s Irine Cheptai, won the international men’s and women’s elite races, respectively.

5. Esha Singh, Udhayveer Sidhu win gold medals at the ISSF Rifle/Pistol World Championship 2022

Udhayveer Sidhu and Esha Singh won gold medals at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Rifle/Pistol World Championship 2022 in Cairo, Egypt on 15 October 2022.   Earlier Rudrankksh Patil won gold at the men's 10m air rifle event yesterday.

Medal winners. 

Today India won three gold and one bronze medal.

Esha Singh won the gold in the junior women’s 25m pistol.

Udhayveer Sidhu won two gold medals on the day. He won a gold medal in the junior men’s 25m pistol and another one in the junior men’s 25m standard pistol titles.

Another medal was won for India by Tejaswini. She won the bronze medal in the junior women’s 25m standard pistol.

At the moment, India is at the second place on the medals table with seven medals - four gold and three bronze. China leads the tally with 16 medals.

6. Rudrankksh Patil bags gold medal at ISSF World Championship in Egypt, Qualify for Paris Olympic

18 year old Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil won the gold medal in men's 10m air rifle event at the ISSF World Championship on 14 October 2022.

The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championships Rifle/Pistol is being held in Cairo, Egypt from 12 -25 October 2022.

In the gold medal match, he defeated Italy's Danilo Dennis Sollazzo 17-15 and also booked a place at the 2024 Paris summer Olympics. 

He is only the second Indian to achieve the feat after Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra, who had won the gold in this event in 2006 in Zagreb, Croatia.

International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF)

It is an international body which governs International shooting.

It was founded in 1907 as International Shooting Union and later renamed as ISSF in 1998.

7. 61st National Open Athletics Championships 2022 starts at Bengaluru

The 61st Senior National Open Athletics Championships 2022 was inaugurated by the Karnataka Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai at the Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru on 15 October 2022. The Senior National Open Athletics Championships 2022 is being organised by the Athletics Federation of India.

The five day championships which will be held from 15-19 October 2202 will see participation of over 800 participants from across the country competing in 47 medal events.

Speaking on the occasion the Chief Minister said that the Karnataka government said that as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav the state government will train 75 athletes for the next summer Olympics to be held in Paris France in 2024.

Athletics Federation of India 

It is the apex sports body for athletics in India. It conducts various athletics championships in the country and is a member of the World Athletics and Asian Athletics.

It was set up in 1943.

8. India wins the Women’s cricket Asia Cup for the seventh time beating Sri Lanka

The Indian women’s  cricket team led by Harmanpreet Kaur crushed  Sri Lanka by 8 wickets in the final of the 8th Women’s Asia Cup 2022 and won it for the 7th time. The final was played at the Sylhet International cricket stadium, Sylhet in Bangladesh on 15 October 2022.

Bangladesh was the host of the 8th women’s Asia Cup cricket 2022, held from 1 October to 15 October 2022.

Bangladesh is the only other country apart from India which has won the Asia cup in 2018.

Seven teams, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh and United Arab Emirates participated in the 8th women’s Asia Cup which was played in the T 20 format. 

Thailand's team created history when they defeated Pakistan to reach the semi-final of the tournament.

India: 71 for 2 in 8.3 overs

Women of the player in the final: Renuka Singh of India for taking 3 wickets for 5 runs.

Women Cricket Asia cup 

The first Asia Women’s cup was held in 2004 in Sri Lanka which was won by India.

The 2004, 2005-06, 2006 and 2008 editions were held in 50 over format.

2012, 2016, 2018, 2022 were held in T 20 format.

India has won it 7 times and Bangladesh once in 2018.

Asian Cricket Council (ACC)

It was set up in 1983 at New Delhi as Asian Cricket Conference to promote cricket in Asia. In 1993 the Asian Cricket Conference became the Asian Cricket Council.

9. Service Sports Control Board tops the medal tally at the 36th National Games 2022

The Service Sports Control Board (SSCB) has topped the medal tally at the recently concluded 36th National Games 2022 with 128 medals, including 61 golds, 35 silvers and 32 bronze. This is the fourth consecutive time that the SSCB has topped the medal tally in the National Games. It topped the medal tally in 2007, 2011 and 2015 and 2022 games.

Service Sports Control Board (SSCB) is a combined team of the Indian Army, Navy and Air force.

The National Games 2022 were held in six cities; Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and Bhavnagar, of Gujarat from September 29 to October 12.  It was last held in Kerala in 2015. 

The next 37th National Games will be held in Goa in 2023.

Best Athlete of the National Game 2022

Best male athlete

29 year old swimmer, Sajan Prakash of Kerala. He won five golds, two silvers and one bronze medal. 

Best female athlete:

14 year old swimmer, Hashika Ramachandra of Karnataka. She won  six golds and one bronze medal in the game.

Best State Trophy

Maharashtra was awarded the Indian Olympic Association’s Best State trophy for winning the most medals (140) in the Games. 

However Maharashtra finished second to SSCB in the medal tally as SSCB had won more gold medals(61) as compared to Maharashtra (30) gold medals.

10. India defeated South Africa in the final ODI to win the series 2–1

India beat South Africa by 7 wickets in the third and final One Day International cricket match on 11 October in Delhi to register a 2–1 win in the 3-match ODI series.

Important facts

  • Chasing the target of 100 runs set by South Africa, India achieved the target by scoring 105 runs in 19.1 overs for the loss of three wickets.

  • Kuldeep Yadav was declared player of the match.

  • Fast bowler Mohammad Siraj was given the 'Man of the Series' award for his consistent performance in the series.
