Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of International Cricket Stadium in Varanasi

The foundation stone of the International Cricket Stadium was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 23, 2023 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

  • The International Cricket Stadium will be developed at Ganjri, Rajatalab in Varanasi at an estimated cost of Rs 450 crore and will cover an area of 30 acres.

  • The location of the stadium is at the intersection of Mata Vindhyavasini's route and is near Motikot village, the birthplace of Raj Narayan ji.

  • The design of the stadium is inspired by Lord Mahadev (Lord Shiva) and features elements such as crescent-shaped roof cover, trident-shaped lights, seating arrangement based on ghat stairs and Bilvipatra-shaped metal sheets on the façade.

  • The stadium has a seating capacity of approximately 30,000 spectators.

On September 23, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 'International Lawyers Conference 2023' at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

  • The Bar Council of India organized the International Lawyers Conference 2023 focusing on the theme ‘Emerging Challenges in Justice Delivery System’ from September 23 to 24, 2023.

  • The conference is the first of its kind in India and discussed various legal topics including emerging legal trends, challenges in cross-border litigation, legal technology and environmental law.

  • The objective of the conference is to provide a platform for meaningful interaction and discussion on national and international legal issues. Its goal is to promote the exchange of ideas and experiences and to enhance international cooperation and understanding in legal matters.

  • The primary objective is to establish a strong, independent and impartial basis for the Indian legal system, which will contribute to the development of India as a nation.

Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR):

  • The objective of the conference is to strengthen ADR methods.

  • The Government of India has enacted an Arbitration Act to formalize informal dispute resolution practices. Similarly, Lok Adalats have successfully resolved about 7 lakh cases in the last 6 years.

Simplification of legal language:

  • There are discussions going on to present the laws in two languages – one for legal professionals and the other for common citizens.

  • The government is trying to formulate new laws in simple language, as seen in the data protection law.

  • The Supreme Court of India has taken steps to translate its judgments into four local languages, namely Hindi, Tamil, Gujarati and Oriya.

  • This initiative marks a significant change in the judicial system of India.

INS Nireekshak conducts diver training exercise in Trincomalee

Indian Navy's Diver Assistance and Submarine Rescue Ship, 'INS Nireekshak' participated in the 'Diver Training Exercise' conducted from 15 to 21 September 2023 conducted at Trincomalee, Sri Lanka.

  • Diving teams from both the Indian Navy and Sri Lanka Navy conducted extensive dives in the port and sea.

  • Additionally, various interactions and training sessions were conducted between the crew of INS Nireekshak and Sri Lanka Navy personnel on topics of mutual interest.

  • Officials from the Junior Command and Staff College, Trincomalee visited INS Nireekshak and learned about its advanced diving capabilities.

  • Commander Eastern Naval Area, Rear Admiral PS de Silva visited the ship and appreciated the support of the Indian Navy in training the divers of the Sri Lanka Navy.

Other activities during the Journey:

  • In addition to the training activities, a social outreach program was conducted at a school for underprivileged children in Trincomalee.

  • On the occasion of International Coastal Cleanup Day on September 16, 2023, a joint beach cleanup campaign was conducted at Dutch Beach.

  • A joint yoga session and a friendly basketball match with Sri Lankan Navy personnel were also organized to promote unity and well-being.

  • INS Inspector was open to visitors and more than 1,500 people visited the ship during its voyage.

  • The visit of the INS Nireekshak to Sri Lanka served to strengthen relations between the Indian and Sri Lankan Navies.

INS Nireekshak:

  • INS Nireekshak is a dive assistance and submarine rescue ship belonging to the Indian Navy.

  • It was built in 1985 by Mazagon Shipbuilders.

  • This ship was inducted into the Indian Navy in 1995.

  • It is equipped with two deep submergence rescue vehicles (DSRVs), capable of carrying 12 people simultaneously to a depth of 300 meters.

  • The primary objective of INS Nireekshak is to facilitate the rescue of distressed submarines and the training of divers.

  • It holds the national record for the deepest dive, reaching a depth of 257 meters.

  • In February 2023, INS Nireekshak received the Chief of Naval Staff 'On-the-Spot Unit' Commendation for deep sea diving and rescue operations in extremely challenging conditions.

Indian cricket creates history: No. 1 ranking in all formats

The Indian men's cricket team achieved a feat by becoming the top-ranked team in all international cricket formats: Test, One Day International (ODI) and T20 International.

  • Ahead of the three-match India-Australia ODI series in September 2023, India was already the No. 1 ranked team in T20 International and Test cricket.

  • In the first match of the series held in Mohali, Punjab on 22 September 2023, India, under the captaincy of KL Rahul, defeated Australia by 5 wickets.

  • India's win in this match took them to the No. 1 spot in the MRF Tires Men's ODI Team Rankings, overtaking Pakistan.

  • India has 116 rating points, while Pakistan is in second place with 115 rating points, and Australia is in third place with 111 rating points.

  • Pakistan had an unsuccessful Asia Cup 2023 campaign as they failed to qualify for the finals. In contrast, India gained valuable ranking points by winning their 8th Asia Cup title.

  • This is the second instance in men's cricket history when a team has achieved the No. 1 ranking across all formats. Earlier only South Africa had achieved this feat in August 2012.

  • Notably, four Indian players currently hold the No.1 ranking in their respective formats in the ICC Rankings: Suryakumar Yadav in T20 Internationals, Mohammed Siraj in ODIs, R. Ashwin in Test Cricket as a bowler, and Ravindra Jadeja in Test Cricket as an all-rounder.

Indian Navy and IISc Bangalore sign MoU

The Indian Navy and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New Delhi.

Benefits of MOU:

  • Academic Collaboration: It will promote academic collaboration in various engineering disciplines.

  • Capacity Building: Both sides will engage in effective training, capacity building, and resolving on-field issues.

  • Equipment vendor base: The agreement aims to expand the vendor base for equipment used in defense.

  • Knowledge Exchange: Faculty and guest lectures will be exchanged to facilitate knowledge sharing.

Innovative Technology:

  • Indian Navy in collaboration with IISc has successfully developed an advanced transcritical carbon dioxide (CO2) based air conditioning (AC) system which works on natural refrigerant.

  • This technology is a significant advancement as it eliminates the need for Halon synthetic refrigerants, and has been developed domestically.

Future Technological Development:

  • The MoU serves as a formal basis for ongoing cooperation in the development and advancement of technologies such as CO2-based AC systems for the defense sector.
