‘Pramod Bhagat’ and Manisha wins gold medal at the BWF Para World Championships 2022

Paralympic champion Pramod Bhagat and teenager Manisha Ramadass won gold for India at the BWF Para Badminton World Championship 2022. The BWF Para Badminton World Championship 2022 for badminton players with disabilities was held in Tokyo, Japan from 1-6 November 2022.

Pramod Bhagat who won the gold medal at the 2019 edition of the BWF Para Badminton World Championship, successfully defended his singles title by defeating Nitesh Kumar of India in the SL3 category.

17 year old Manisha Ramadass won her first gold medal at the event by defeating Japanese Mamiko Toyoda in the women's singles SU5 finals.

India ended the championship with 16 medals.

World's first Vedic clock to be installed in Ujjain

Madhya Pradesh education minister Mohan Yadav laid the foundation stone of the world’s first Vedic Clock at the 300-year-old Jiwaji Observatory in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. The Jiwaji observatory was constructed by Maharaja Sawai Raja Jaisingh of Jaipur in 1719.

The clock to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 1.62 crore aims to make people familiar with the Vedic time calculation.

Vedic Clock 

Elaborating on the Vedic clock the minister said that the Vedic clock will be based on Vedic calculation of the time, in which the 24 hours of the day are divided into Muhurats. The Vedic clock will be synced with the position of the Sun.

He said that there will be a dedicated mobile application for the readings of the Vedic Clock, and citizens will be able to use it on their smartphones, computers, televisions, and other devices. 

 He also said “the application will also have information on Vedic Hindu Panchang, planetary positions, Muhurats, astrological calculation, and predictions, etc.

India to participate in the World Travel Market 2022 London to boost tourism in India

The Union Ministry of Tourism will represent India at the World Travel Market (WTM) 2022 being organized in London, England from 7th to 9th November 2022 to boost international tourism in India. The World Travel Market is one of the largest international travel exhibitions. 

With the opening of the tourism sector by the government of India, the government wants to showcase it as a safe international tourist destination.

The Indian delegation is being led by Arvind Singh, Secretary (Tourism), Government of India 

Theme of the World Travel Market 2022: The Future of Travel Starts Now’

According to the government of India, before the Covid pandemic, the contribution of the tourism sector to the Indian economy was 5.19%.

According to the government of India in 2021, foreign exchange earnings from tourism were US $ 8.797 billion.

Rising Sun Water Fest-2022 on ‘Umiam Lake’ ends in Meghalaya

The first of its kind Rising Sun Water Fest ended on 5 November 2022 with a grand closing ceremony at Umiam Lake, Meghalaya showcasing the cultural heritage of the North eastern region. 

The water sports and cultural extravaganza held from November 3-5 was aimed at encouraging the sports loving youth to take up water sports like Rowing and Sailing. It also aimed at promoting tourism in the North East.

Organizers of the Fest 

The Rising Sun Water Fest was organised by the Eastern Command of the Indian Army in cooperation with the governments of Assam and Meghalaya.

The Festival was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad Sangma on 3 November.  

The Chief minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma and Lt Gen RP Kalita, Army commander Eastern Command were the chief guests at the closing ceremony on 5 November.

Speaking on the occasion Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Assam and Meghalaya will work with the Indian Army to transform the Umiam Lake into a world-class venue for aquatic sports.

Umiam Lake 

The Umiam Lake also known as Barapani Lake is an artificial lake which was created after a dam was built on the river Umiam in early 1960s.  Umiam hydroelectric project supplies electricity to Meghalaya and Assam. The lake lies in the capital city of Meghalaya, Shillong.

State of Meghalaya 

Meghalaya means the abode of clouds. 

Meghalaya was created as an autonomous state within Assam in 1970 and achieved full statehood on January 21, 1972 by carving out hilly areas of the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo.

It has the wettest region in the world, Mawsynram village near Cherrapunji. Mawsynram has recorded rainfalls of 700mm per year.

The capital of Meghalaya is Shillong which was made Assam's capital in 1874, remained so till January 1972,

Nongkrem dance festival 

Ka Pomblang Nongkrem dance, also popularly known as Nongkrem dance, is a five day religious festival of the Khasis tribe. It is celebrated during November month. Nongkrem Dance Festival is performed to appease the all-powerful Goddess Ka Blei Synshar for a rich bumper harvest and prosperity of the people.

Wangala Festival

The Wangala Festival is also known as the 100 drums festival.  It is a most popular festival among the Garos tribes of Meghalaya. Wangala Festival is a harvest festival held in honour of Saljong, the Sun-god of fertility.

Behdienkhlam Festival

Behdienkhlam Festival is the most celebrated Cultural festival among the Pnars tribes. Behdienkhlam (chasing away the Demon of Cholera) is celebrated annually in July after the sowing period, the most important dance festival of the Jaintia tribes

6 million tonnes of sugar export allowed by the government till May 23

The government of India has allowed the export of 6 million tonnes of sugar till 31st May 2023 in the 2022-23 sugar season .The sugar season in India is from October to September.  In the 2021-22 sugar season the government has allowed the export of 10 million tonnes of sugar. The notification was issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Union ministry of Commerce and Industry on 5 November 2022.

On 29 October 2022 the government of India had extended the ban on the export of sugar till the 2022-23 season so as to check the price of the sugar in the domestic market. Also it kept sugar in the restrictive list meaning that it can be exported only with the permission of the government of India. 

In the latest order the government has allowed the export of 6 million tonnes of sugar and has also allocated export quotas for various sugar mills.

With an expected bumper sugar production of 41 million tonnes in the current season the government has allowed the export of sugar in the current season.

India is the largest producer and consumer of sugar in the world and second largest exporter of sugar in the world after Brazil.

Mohammad Tayyab Ikram of Macau elected the new President of FIH

Mohammad Tayyab Ikram of Macau was elected as the new President of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) on 5 November 2022. He is also at present the Chief Executive Officer of the Asian Hockey Federation.

The 48th Congress of the FIH, which was held virtually on 4th and 5th of  November, voted on the 5th November to elect a new President of the FIH. The election was necessitated due to the resignation of the earlier president  Narinder Batra on 18  July 2022. 

Mohammad Tayyab Ikram defeated Marc Coudron of Belgium to become the new President of FIH. 

Term of the new President 

The term of the FIH president is 4 years . However the term of the newly elected President Mohammad Tayyab Ikram will be of two years.

The Previous President Narinder Batra  had to resign  in 2022 after the Delhi High Court judgement against him . His term of FIH was to end in 2024 . Hence the new Resident will  be of two years to complete the remaining period of Narinder Batra.
