1. India is hosting the 59th ABU General Assembly 2022 from 25th to 30th November’ 2022

59th ABU General Assembly 2022

The government of India owned public broadcaster Prasar Bharti  which owns the All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan (DD) is hosting the 59th Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) General Assembly 2022 from 25th to 30th November 2022 in New Delhi. Prasar Bharti was set up in 1997 by an act of Parliament.

Prasar Bharati CEO Gaurav Dwivedi said that around  300 international delegates from 40 countries representing 50 organizations are participating in the event.

Theme of the 59th ABU General Assembly is: Serving the People: Media’s Role in Times of Crisis.

The ABU (Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union) was set up in 1964 is a non-profit, professional association of the broadcasting organizations of Asia and pacific region.

The ABU has over 250 members in over 70 countries on four continents.

The headquarters of ABU: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Prasar Bharati celebrated the silver jubilee of its establishment on 23 November, 2022.

  • It came into existence on this day in 1997 as a statutory autonomous body established by an Act of Parliament.

  • This includes Doordarshan and All India Radio.

3. Prasar Bharti launches new logo

India's public broadcaster Prasar Bharati unveiled its new logo on July 11, 2022. The Logo was released by Apurva Chandra, secretary, ministry of information and broadcasting. 

  • About Logo

  • The new logo of Prasar Bharati is full of rich meanings.

  • The central circle and the elements of the map of India depict trust, security and service of perfection to the common man.

  • The dark medium blue colour of the logo represents both the sky and the sea which is associated with open space, freedom, intuition, imagination, inspiration and sensitivity.

  • The colour blue also represents the meaning of depth, trust, loyalty, honesty, knowledge, confidence, stability, trust and intelligence.

  • The blue colour also pays homage to the Indian ethos and traditions associated with religious figures, mythological characters found in Indian miniature paintings.

  • The Logo is defined as a blend of both AIR and Doordarshan.

4. India to diplomatically boycott Beijing Winter olympics

The Ministry of External Affairs has announced that India will diplomatically boycott the 24th Winter Olympics to be held in Beijing, China from 4 to 20 February 2022. It means that no Indian government officials will participate in the opening and the closing ceremony of the event. The Prasar Bharti Chief Executive Officer, Shashi Shekhar Vempati has also announced that Doordarshan will not telecast the opening and the closing ceremony of the game.

 

  • India announced this move after China included a regiment commander, Qi Fabao of the People Liberation Army (PLA)  involved in the June 15, 2020 clash with the Indian Army in Galwan as one of the torch bearers of the Winter Olympics.
  • However the only Indian player, Arif Khan of Jammu and Kashmir, will compete in the Slalom and Giant Slalom event. 
  • The US, Australia,Canada, United Kingdom, Japan and New Zealand  are also diplomatically boycotting the Beijing Winter Olympics over protest against the Chinese government treatment of Ugyher muslims in China and their human rights violation  . 
  • Japan though has not officially announced a diplomatic boycott of the Olympics but as a protest against the human rights abuse in China, it is not sending any official delegation to the game .
  • However, athletes from these countries will participate in the games.
