Constitution Day or National Law Day

Constitution Day or National Law Day is celebrated in India every year on 26 November as it marks the day when the Indian Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly in 1949.

Important facts

  • On 19 November 2015, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment notified the decision of the Government of India to celebrate 26 November as 'Constitution Day'.

  • The day was declared in the year which marked the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, the chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constitution. 

  • In early 1948, Dr. Ambedkar completed the draft of the Indian Constitution and presented it to the Constituent Assembly.

  • This draft was adopted on November 26, 1949.

  • The Indian Constitution came into force on January 26, 1950, which is celebrated as Republic Day.

  • It took 2 years 11 months and 18 days to make the constitution.

  • Originally the Constitution of India was written in English and Hindi.
