History of World Press Freedom Day:
World Press Freedom Day was proposed by UNESCO's General Conference in 1991 to celebrate and promote press freedom.
In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared May 3 as World Press Freedom Day.
The day is observed annually to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and to remind governments of their responsibility to uphold the right to freedom of expression.
World Press Freedom Day also provides an opportunity to honour journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
The day advocates for the safety and independence of journalists who work to disseminate information to the public.
