Background of the day

• It was initiated by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in 1980.

• The reason for celebrating this day is that on this day in the year 1970 the statutes of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) were adopted.

• UNWTO was established in 1975 and five years after this, World Tourism Day started.

• In 1997, at its fifth session in Istanbul, Turkey, the UNWTO decided that one country would host World Tourism Day every year.

• The hosting of World Tourism Day, 2022 has been handed over to Indonesia.
