ZyCoV-D to be launched in seven States

The first COVID vaccine ZyCoV-D is cleared by India’s drug regulator for those aged 12 and above.

  • It is likely that the vaccine will be administered to adults first.
  • It will not be the part of national vaccine drive initially but will be introduced in seven states first.
  • ZyCoV-D will be a needle-less vaccine which will be administered using a needle-free applicator instead of traditional syringes.
  • This is the first COVID-19 vaccine candidate developed on a plasmid DNA platform to be commercially introduced anywhere in the world.

  • ZyCoV-D is a DNA plasmid-based COVID-19 vaccine developed by Indian pharmaceutical company Cadila Healthcare, with support from the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council. It is approved for emergency use in India.
  • The vaccine contains a DNA plasmid vector that carries the gene encoding the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. As with other DNA vaccines, the recipient's cells then produce the spike protein, eliciting a protective immune response.
