Justice Mohanty gets additional charge of Lokpal chairperson

President Ram Nath Kovind has named Justice Pradeep Kumar Mohanty, a judicial member of the Lokpal, as the acting chairman of the Lokpal on the completion of the term of Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghosh.

• Justice Mohanty was appointed as a judicial member of the Lokpal on 27 March 2019.

• Justice Mohanty's father Jugal Kishore Mohanty served as the Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court.

• About Lokpal

• The Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act was passed in 2013.

• The President gave his assent to it on January 1, 2014 and came into force on January 16, 2014.

• The name Lokpal or Lokayukta in India was established in 1963 by the famous jurist Dr. L. M. Singhvi had given.

• The Lokpal is a multi-member body consisting of a chairperson and a maximum of 8 members. In which four members can be judicial and the rest can be non-judicial.

• The term of the chairperson and members of the Lokpal body is 5 years or till the age of 70 years.

• Former Supreme Court judge Pinaki Chandra Ghosh was appointed as the country's first Lokpal.
