1. Raising Day of Railway Police Force (RPF)

RPF Raising day is observed every year o­n the 20th of September, the day on which the Railway Protection Force (RPF) was elevated as an Armed Force of the Union.


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • The Railway Police Force was included in the Central Armed Forces in the year 1985.
  • In 1965 it was renamed as "Railway Protection Special Force".

  • In 1966, the RPF was given legal powers for better protection of railway property by enacting the Railway Property (Unlawful Rights) Act.

  • It is the 37th Raising Day of RPF.

  • RPF has been entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding railway property.

2. World Bamboo Day

  • According to the World Bamboo Organisation, while bamboo grows naturally in many parts of the world, they are not used in a sustainable way.
  • The organisation aims to spread awareness about the potential of bamboo.

  • The purpose of celebrating this day is to highlight its sustainable use, and to promote the cultivation of bamboo for new industries around the world.

  • It also promotes local and traditional uses for the economic development of the community.

  • The theme of 2022 is 'Plant Bamboo'.

Background of the day :

  • The World Bamboo Organisation declared 18 September as World Bamboo Day at the Eighth World Bamboo Congress held in Bangkok in 2009.

  • The event was attended by representatives from about 100 countries, and they all agreed to mark World Bamboo Day.

  • This day is also marked as Royal Thai Forestry Day.

  • The World Bamboo Organisation was established in the year 2005. Its headquarter is in Antwerp (Belgium).

3. International Coastal Cleanup Day

The International Coastal Cleanup Day is observed every year on the third Saturday of the September month.  The day aims to create awareness amongst the people about the garbage pollution on the beach and to encourage voluntary action by the people to clear the beaches.

Background of the Day :

  • The credit for starting the day is given to American Linda Maraniss and Kathy O’Hara who started the campaign in 1986 in the United States. Since then it has grown into an International movement.

Theme of the Day :

  • Theme of the International Coastal Cleanup Day 2022: Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar/Clean Coast Safe Sea. 

Events in India on the International Coastal Cleanup Day :

  • Vigyan Prasar, an autonomous body under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India launched a Clean Coast Safe Sea campaign in 75 coastal places across the country.
  • The clean coast-safe sea campaign culminated at the Juhu Beach, Mumbai on 17 September 2022. The clean-up drive in Mumbai  was organised by the Indian Coast Guard.

4. World’s largest blood donation drive launched in Gujarat

The Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel launched the world’s largest blood donation drive on 17 September 2022 on the occasion of the 72nd birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Ahmedabad.


IMPORTANT FACTS -

  • The ‘Mega Blood Donation Drive’ has been organized by Akhil Bharatiya Terapanth Yuva Parishad Ahmedabad.  According to the organizers “the target is to get more than 1, 50,000 units of blood donation by organizing around 2,000 Blood Donation Camps”
  • Meanwhile in New Delhi the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya launched  Raktdaan Amrit Mahotsav, a countrywide mega drive for voluntary blood donation from 17th September to 1st October this year. 
  • 1st October is observed as the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day.

5. World Ozone Day

World Ozone Day or International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated on 16 September every year.

  • The purpose of celebrating this day is to make people aware about the depletion of the ozone layer and find possible solutions to protect it.
  • This day is celebrated on the anniversary of the signing of the Montreal Protocol, which called for banning substances that cause depletion of the ozone Layer.

  • On this day people around the world organize talks and seminars about the ozone layer and its importance.

  • Theme of 2022 - 'Global Cooperation to Protect Life on Earth'

Background of the Day :

  • In December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly designated 16 September as the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer.

  • In 1987, representatives of 24 countries held a meeting in Montreal, Canada to discuss the alarming state of ozone layer depletion.

  • In 1985 the governments of the world adopted the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and decided to save the ozone layer.

  • World Ozone Day was first observed in the year 1995.

What is the ozone layer ?

  • The ozone layer is a delicate shield of gas that protects the Earth from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the Sun.

  • It preserves human life.

  • The main causes of ozone depletion and depletion are manufactured chemicals, propellants, foam-blowing agents, manufactured halocarbon refrigerants and solvents.

6. National Engineer’s Day

  • The Government of India In 1968, decided to celebrate 15 September as National Engineers Day.

  • The day serves as a reminder to all engineers, particularly civil engineers to make Visvesvaraya their role model and work towards fulfilling the goals for the betterment of the country.

About Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya :

  • He was born on September 15, 1861 in Karnataka.

  • He joined Madras University to study for a Bachelor of Arts.

  • He later decided to change career paths and obtained a Diploma in Civil Engineering from the College of Science, Pune.

  • He is credited with the creation of the 'Block System'.

  • He patented and installed an irrigation system with water floodgates in a reservoir near Pune city to increase the level and storage of water supply.

  • He was awarded the 'Bharat Ratna' in 1955 for his exceptional contribution to the making of India.

  • He has also been awarded the British Knighthood and was the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918.

7. International Day of Democracy

  • In 2007 the United Nations general Assembly passed a resolution to observe 15 September as International Day of Democracy. 
  • The first International Day of Democracy was observed on 15 September 2008.

Theme 2022 :

  • The theme of the International Day of Democracy 2022: Protecting Press Freedom for Democracy
  • The theme focuses on the importance of media freedom to democracy, peace, and delivering on the Sustainable Development Goals. According to the Democracy Index 2021 report of the Economic Intelligence Unit, India was ranked as 46th amongst 167 countries. Norway was at the top and it was considered as the most democratic country in the world.
  • The American President Abraham Lincoln said, "Democracy is a rule of the people, for the people and by the people".

8. Hindi Diwas 2022

History of Hindi Diwas :

  • The Constituent Assembly of India declared Hindi written in Devanagari script as the official language of the Union of India on 14 September 1949.

  • English is the second official language.

  • It was decided to celebrate this day as Hindi Diwas by the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru.

  • Article 351 of the Constitution of India deals with the promotion and upliftment of the Hindi language.

  • Hindi language has also been included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

  • Establishment of Central Hindi Directorate in the year 1960

  • The Indian Council for Cultural Relations has established 'Hindi Chairs' in various universities/institutions abroad.
