2021 Theme: “Sustainable Mountain Tourism.”

International Mountain Day is celebrated annually on December 11, to promote awareness for mountain communities around the globe. December 11th was officially declared as International Mountain Day by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 57/245 in December 2002.

  • Sustainable tourism in mountains can be seen as a contribution to creating additional and alternative livelihood options and promoting poverty alleviation, social inclusion, in addition to landscape and biodiversity conservation.

Importance of mountains

According to the UN, mountains are home to 15 percent of the global population and they provide fresh water for daily life to half of humanity. Mountains also host about half of the biodiversity hotspots across the world.

Human Rights Day (also called HRD) is observed every year on 10 December – the day on which the United Nations General Assembly adopted, in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more. Everyone is entitled to these rights, without discrimination.

3. 9th December- International Anti-Corruption Day

The International Anti-Corruption Day is observed globally on 9th December every year to raise awareness of corruption and of the role of the convention in combating and presenting it. Theme for 2021 is, “Your right, your role: say no to corruption.

  • The United Nations General Assembly on 31st October, 2003, adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption, and designated December 9 as International Anti-Corruption Day, in order to raise awareness about corruption and of the role of Convention in fighting and preventing it.
  • The convention came into force in the year 2005, and since then the day is being observed annually.

7. World Soil Day

This year, the theme of World Soil Day 2021 is ‘Halt soil salinization, boost soil productivity’ with a motive to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being. 

The  Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Conference, in June 2013, urged the  UN General Assembly.to adopt the World Soil Day. The  UN General  Assembly finally designated December 5, 2014, as the first official World Soil Day.

8. Indian Navy Day, 4th December

Indian Navy Day is celebrated every year on December 4 to commemorate the attack on the Karachi harbour during the India-Pakistan war 1971 under operation Trident. 

Operation Trident:

  • Operation Trident was an offensive operation launched by the Indian Navy on the night of 4–5 December on Pakistan's port city of Karachi during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.
  • Operation Trident saw the first use of anti-ship missiles in combat in the region and inflicted heavy damage on Pakistani vessels and facilities .

  • The Border Security Force (BSF) is India's border guarding organisation on its border with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
  • It is one of the five Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) of India, and was raised in the wake of the 1965 War on 1 December 1965"for ensuring the security of the borders of India and for matters connected there with".
