1. Abdul Latif Rashid elected as new president of Iraq

On 13 October 2022, lawmakers in Iraq elected Kurdish politician Abdul Latif Rashid as the country's new president. He will replace Barham Saleh.

Important facts

  • After two rounds of voting, 160 votes were cast in favor of Rashid, while Saleh got 99 votes.

  • Rashid, 78, is an engineer and was Iraqi Water Resources Minister from 2003 to 2010.

  • He has 15 days to invite a nominee from the largest parliamentary bloc to form the government.

  • The country had seen months of political stalemate after powerful Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr emerged as the biggest winner in a parliamentary vote last year but failed to garner enough support to form a government.

  • Al-Sadr withdrew his lawmakers from the House and announced in August that he would quit politics, which was followed by violence in Baghdad.

2. IAEA chief Rafael Gross calls for protecting Zaporizhzhia nuclear power in a meeting with President Putin in Russia

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Gross met the Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg, amid concern over the safety of the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

Rafael Gross met Putin after his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv last week. 

Rafael Gross called for setting up a protection zone around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear power plant and asserted that they cannot lose any more time. He emphasised that Russia and Ukraine must do everything to help in ensuring that a nuclear accident does not occur during the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

Concern over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant 

The 6000 MW Zaporizhzhia nuclear power complex is the largest European nuclear power complex which has been occupied by the invading Russian forces since early March 2022.

The area has been heavily fortified by the Russian military and the Ukrainian forces are also launching a counter attack. This has led to the fear that the nuclear complex could be hit in an attack which could lead to a nuclear catastrophe in the area.

The IAEA was set up in 1957 as an agency of the United Nations.

The IAEA was set up to work with the member countries and multiple partners worldwide to promote safe, secure and peaceful nuclear technologies. 

The International Atomic Energy Agency is the world's central intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical co-operation in the nuclear field.

3. World’s first space tourist Dennis Tito to ride to moon again on SpaceX

World’s first space tourist, Dennis Tito, has signed up with the Elon Musk Company SpaceX, to fly around the Moon aboard the Starship rocket.

The SpaceX Company on 12 October 2022 said that the rocket will take Tito and his wife, Akiko, within 200km (125 miles) of the far side of the Moon without landing on its surface.  The date of the launch has yet to be announced as the Starship is yet to be tested.

Dennis Tito, an American engineer and entrepreneur became the first human space tourist to visit the International Space Station in 2001.

He was launched onboard a Russian rocket with the help of US-based Space Adventures in 2001.

Few companies in the world are striving to make space travel a reality. They are SpaceX , Richard Branson-founded Virgin Galactic SPCE.N, and  Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin  which currently offers suborbital joyrides that hit an altitude of about 106km (66 miles) above the Earth.

90 year old American actor, William Shatner, who played the role of Captain James T Kirk on the TV series Star Trek, became the oldest person to ride a rocket into space when he travelled on a Blue Origin flight last year.

Human Space Flight 

The first person to go into space was Yury Gagarin of the Soviet Union on 12 April 1961 onboard the Vostok Rocket.

The first woman to go into space was Valentina Tereshkova of the Soviet Union on 16 June 1963 onboard the Vostok 6 Rocket.

The first American to go into space was Alan Shepard in 1961.

Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma is the only Indian to go into space. He was part of the Soviet mission aboard Soyuz T-11 on 3 April 1984.

4. Ananth Narayan Gopalakrishnan assumes charge as whole-time member at SEBI

Former banker Ananth Narayan Gopalakrishnan took charge as the fourth whole time member (WTM) in the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on 10 October.

Important facts

  • Narayan, who was a member of various advisory committees of SEBI and RBI, has been appointed for the initial three years.

  • Prior to taking over, Narayan was Associate Professor at the SP Jain Institute of Management and Research.

  • He has over two and a half decades of experience in banking and financial markets, during which he held the position of Regional Head of Financial Markets for ASEAN and South Asia at Standard Chartered Bank.

  • He has expertise in foreign exchange, interest rates, derivatives and debt capital markets.

  • Narayan has also worked with Deutsche Bank and Citibank.

  • Narayan has been given the Department of Market Intermediaries Regulation and Supervision (MIRSD), Department of Alternative Investment Funds and Foreign Portfolio Investors (AFD), Department of Integrated Monitoring (ISD), Department of Economic and Policy Analysis (DEPA) and Department of Information Technology (ITD) in SEBI.

5. Harmanpreet, Rizwan win ICC Player of the Month awards for September

India women's cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Pakistan wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan won the ICC Player of the Month awards for September-2022 in the women's and men's categories.

  • Harmanpreet Kaur became India's first ever winner of the ICC Women's Player of the Month due to her leading role in her team's first ODI series win in England since 1999.

  • She performed brilliantly during the ODI series, scoring 221 runs in three matches, maintaining a strike rate of 103.47 and getting dismissed only once.

  • The women cricketers selected for the Women's Cricket Award included Bangladesh's Nigar Sultana and India's captains Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana.

  • The ICC Men's Player of the Month nominees included Australia's Cameron Green and India's Axar Patel, but Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan managed to bag the ICC Men's Player of the Month award for the first time.

6. Lucknow's Jagriti Yadav becomes UK high commissioner for a day

20-year-old Jagriti Yadav of Lucknow has been appointed to the highest post of British High Commission in India for a day under women empowerment after winning a competition on the occasion of International Girl Child Day on 11 October 2022.

  • Jagriti is the sixth person to receive this honour of becoming the British High Commissioner.

  • According to the British Embassy, Jagriti is the sixth winner to win the 'High Commissioner for a Day-India Edition' competition held every year since 2017.

  • Jagriti, who hails from Lucknow, remained Britain's highest diplomat in India for a whole day. She gained experience in many diplomatic activities.

  • Including holding meetings with various parties and presiding over the meeting. Apart from this, she has been involved in many events throughout the day.

  • During this, Jagriti met the Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture Meenakshi Lekhi as well as met West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin.

7. Praveen Giri wins silver medal in Water Technology at World Skill Competition 2022

B.Tech final year student in Mechanical Engineering of C.V. Raman Global University Odisha, Praveen Kumar Giri, won the silver medal for India in Water Technology at the World Skills Competition 2022, held at Stuttgart, Germany on 10 October 2022.

He is the second Indian to win a medal in the world skill competition after Aswastha Narayana won the gold medal in water technology at the 2019 event in Kazan, Russia.

 In water technology, a total of 7 countries participated this time including Singapore, Japan, South Africa, Germany, and Korea.”

The Gold Medal was won by Singapore, Silver by India and Bronze was won by Japan.

8. CJI Uday Umesh Lalit recommends Justice ‘DY Chandrachud’ as his successor

The Chief Justice of India (CJI) Uday Umesh Lalit has recommended the name of Justice DY Chandrachud as his successor to the Union Minister of law and Justice on 11 October 2022. Justice Chandrachud is the senior-most Judge in the Supreme Court after the current Chief Justice of India.

Convention on appointment of next CJI

  • On 7 October 2022 the Union Law ministry requested the CJI to recommend the name of his successor as per the convention. 
  • The Memorandum of Procedure for the appointment of the Chief Justice of India says that the Union Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs will, at an ‘appropriate time,’ seek the recommendation of the outgoing Chief Justice of India for the appointment of the next Chief Justice of India.
  • Though there is no specific timeline, as per practice, the Ministry seeks the outgoing CJI’s recommendation a month before the retirement.
  • The Judge of the Supreme Court retires at the age of 65 years.
  • Chief Justice Lalit, who took charge as CJI on August 27, will retire on November 8 this year. After him, Justice Chandrachud is likely to become the 50th CJI.

Justice D Y Chandrachud 

Justice D Y Chandrachud was former Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and was elevated to the Supreme Court in May 2016. He has been part of some key benches that delivered landmark judgments like Ayodhya Ramjanmbhumi and Sabarimala. The Ayodhya verdict was unanimous and Chandrachud was part of the five-judge bench headed by then CJI Ranjan Gogoi.

Justice Chandrachud, who is set to be the 50th Chief Justice of India, would have a tenure of two years. He is due to retire on November 10, 2024.

9. Central government appoints Chief Justices of Rajasthan, Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir Ladakh High Court

The Union Ministry of Law and Justice on 11 October 2022 announced the appointment of the new Chief Justices for the High Courts in Rajasthan, Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Union Minister of Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju informed that Justice Pankaj Mithal has been appointed as Chief Justice in the Rajasthan High Court here. He was earlier the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court. 

Justice Prasanna B Varale has been appointed as the Karnataka HC’s Chief Justice. He was the senior most judge of the Bombay High Court.

Justice AM Magrey was elevated as the Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court. Justice AM Magrey was earlier the Judge of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.

The government has announced the appointment after the Supreme Court collegium had recommended their appointment.

Procedure for the appointment of High Court Chief Justice 

  • Under article 217 of the Indian constitution the Chief Justice of a High Court is appointed by the President in consultation with the Chief Justice of India.
  • The Chief Justice of India consults two senior most Judges of the Supreme Court and other Judges who are conversant with the affairs of the concerned High Court.
  • The Chief Justice of India will send the recommendation to the Union Minister of Law, Justice.
  • The Union Minister of Law, Justice then obtains the views of the concerned State Government. After receipt of the views of the State Government, the Union Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs, will submit proposals to the Prime Minister, who will then advise the President as to the selection.
  • As soon as the appointment is approved by the President, the Ministry of Law and Justice announces the appointment and issues necessary notification in the Gazette of India.

  • This is Amit Shah's second visit to Bihar after the BJP was ousted from power in the state during the political turmoil in Bihar in August this year.

About Jayaprakash Narayan 

  • On October 11, 2022, the birth anniversary of Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan was celebrated across the country.

  • He was born on 11th October, 1902 in Sitabdiara, Bihar.

  • He was Influenced by Marxist ideas and Gandhian ideology.

  • He was educated at universities in the United States where he became a supporter of Marxist ideology.

  • On his return to India in the year 1929, he joined the Indian National Congress.

  • In the year 1932, he was sentenced to one year's imprisonment for participating in the civil disobedience movement against British rule in India.

  • In the year 1948, he left the Congress party along with most of the socialist leaders of the Congress and formed the Praja Socialist Party in the year 1952.

  • He soon became dissatisfied with politics and announced in 1954 that he would devote his life to the Bhoodan movement which was founded by Vinoba Bhave.

  • In 1959, he introduced the concept of 'reconstruction of Indian politics' through a four-tier hierarchy of village, district, state and union councils.

  • In the year 1974, he started a program against corruption for social change which was termed as total revolution.

  • A total revolution is a combination of political, social, economic, cultural, ideological or intellectual, educational and spiritual revolutions.

  • Jayaprakash Narayan was posthumously awarded India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna (1999), for his invaluable contribution to the freedom struggle, upliftment of the poor and downtrodden.

  • He died on October 8, 1979 in Patna.
