1. PM inaugurates and lays the foundation of multiple projects in Varanasi

  • In an endeavour to strengthen the rural economy and help farmers of the region, PM lays foundation stone of ‘Banas Dairy Sankul’ at the UP State Industrial Development Authority Food Park, Karkhiyaon, Varanasi.
    • Spread across 30 acres of land, the Dairy will be built at a cost of about Rs 475 crores and will have a facility for processing 5 lakh litre of milk per day. 
  • The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for the Biogas based Electricity generation plant for the Milk Producers Cooperative Union Plant, Ramnagar, Varanasi.
  • The Prime Minister launched a Portal and Logo dedicated to the Conformity Assessment Scheme of milk products, developed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) with the help of National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).
  • PM distributes rural residential rights record ‘Gharauni’ under the Swamitva scheme of the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj to over 20 lakh residents of UP.
  • The PM also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of developmental Projects worth over Rs. 1500 crores in Varanasi.
  • He paid tribute to “Chaudhary Charan Singh on Kisan Diwas”.

2. India’s 2nd Mega Common Facility Centre for Gem and Jewellery sector to be set up in Mumbai

  • It will be set up at the Santacruz Electronic Export Processing Zone (SEEPZ) Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Mumbai.
  • It will be the second such facility in India after Surat, in Gujarat.
  • The Mega Common Facility will provide training to the workforce in the Gems and Jewellery sector and  will provide cutting-edge technology for manufacturing and other allied processes of the gem and jewellery sector.
  • The Indian Gems and Jewellery sector is one of the largest in the world, contributing around 29% to the global jewellery consumption.
  • As of February 2021, India’s gold and diamond trade contributed ~7.5% to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 14% to India’s total merchandise exports. 
  • The Government of India is aiming at US$ 70 billion in jewellery export in the next five years (until 2025),
  •  In FY 2020-21, gems & jewellery exports in India stood at US$ 25.30 billion.
  • The US is the biggest export destination for Indian Gems and Jewellery.

3. The longest Expressway of Uttar Pradesh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the Ganga Expressway in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur on 18th December 2021.

  • Length of the Ganga Expressway: 594 kilometers.
    • It will connect Bijauli village near Kharkhauda on NH-334 in Meerut district with Judapur Dandu village near Soraon on NH-19 in Prayagraj district.
    • It will pass through 12 districts of Uttar Pradesh namely (from west to east), Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Budaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Raebareli, Pratapgarh and Prayagraj.
  • The estimated cost of the six lane expressway: Rs. 36,230 crores.
  • It will be constructed by: Adani Group and IRB Infrastructure.
  • Expected to be completed by: year 2025.

There will be a 3.5km long airstrip on the Ganga Expressway, which will assist in emergency take-off and landing of Indian Air Force (IAF) planes.

5. North India’s first Centre of Entrepreneurship in Medi Electronics and Health Informatics start operations in Lucknow

  • North India’s first Centre of Entrepreneurship - “MedTech” was inaugurated by the Union Minister of State, Ministry of Electronics and IT, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajeev Chandrasekhar at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute , Lucknow.
  •  It has been built in partnership with Software technology Park of India, Ministry of Electronics and IT and Government of Uttar Pradesh. 
  • The centre of entrepreneurship shall provide state of the art facilities to Startups in the field of Medi electronics and health informatics providing impetus to the startup culture in the state.
  • Medi electronics sector is currently estimated to be at $10 billion and is expected to grow to $50 bn by 2025.
  • India imports around 75-80% of its Medi electronic and health informatics requirements.
  • Health Informatics (HI) is a relatively new, interdisciplinary field in the healthcare industry that uses information technology to organize and analyze health records to improve healthcare outcomes.

6. Tamil Thai Vaazhthu declared Tamil Nadu State song

  •  The song is from the Tamil drama ‘Manonmaniam’ penned by P Sundaram Pillai.
  • The song is composed in Mullaipaani Ragam also known as Mohana Raagam by M.S Viswanathan.

7. National Summit on Agro and Food Processing

  • It is organised by the Government of Gujarat from 14 to 16 December 2021 at Anand, Gujarat.
  • The theme of the summit is “Agro and Food Processing: Entering a new era of Cooperation Atma Nirbhar Krishi”.
  •  It is being attended by over 5000 farmers who will be present in the Summit, apart from farmers being connecting Live through Central Institutes of ICAR, Krishi Vigyan Kendras and ATMA (Agricultural Technology Management Agency) network in the States.

8. NEDFI Announces New Scheme Atmanirbhar Hastshilpkar Scheme for the Artisans under Ministry of Doner

With the objective to develop the petty artisans of the North Eastern Region by providing financial assistance in the form of term loan for income generating activities for setting up / expansion / modernization / working capital requirement and other activities related to the sector NEDFi has introduced Atmanirbhar Hastshilpkar Scheme to the grass root Artisans of the region.

  • The scheme was officially launched on 9/12/2021. During the launching ceremony, a total of 17 artisans have been provided with credit assistance of Rs.1 lakh per artisan.
  • The credit facility is collateral free and carries a subsidized interest rate of 6% p.a., which is repayable in 24 months.

For regular repayment, an incentive of 1% on the interest rate is provided, which will be refunded to the artisans on successful repayment of loans.

NEDFI

NEDFi is notified as a Public Financial Institution under Section 4A of the Companies Act 1956 and was registered as an NBFC in 2002 with RBI. NEDFi provides financial assistance to micro, small, medium and large enterprises for setting up industrial, infrastructure and agri-allied projects in the North Eastern Region of India and also Microfinance through MFI/NGOs. Besides financing, the Corporation offers Consultancy & Advisory services to the state Governments, private sectors and other agencies.


Ministry of Doner

The Ministry of Development of the North-Eastern Region (MoDONER) established in 2001 functions as the nodal department of the Central Government to deal with the matters relating to the planning, execution and monitoring of development schemes and projects in the North Eastern Region. Its vision is to accelerate the pace of socio-economic development of the Region so that it may enjoy growth parity with the rest of the country.

9. Bird Flu confirmed in Ducks

The Alappuzha district was put on alert, after an outbreak of bird flu was confirmed at Kunnumma South (ward 10) in Thakazhy grama panchayat.

Highlights:

  • The Animal Husbandry Department (AHD) sent samples of dead birds to the National Institute of High-Security Animal Disease (NIHSAD), Bhopal for analyses, which tested positive for avian influenza.
  • The presence of H5N1 subtype of the Influenza A virus was reported in ducks.
  • Between 8,000 and 10,000 ducks were culled within a 1-km radius of the hotspot.
  • Earlier this year, avian flu caused by the H5N8 strain of the Influenza A virus was detected from six places in Kuttanad at Nedumudi, Thakazhy, Pallippad, Karuvatta, and Kainakary in Alappuzha district and Neendoor in Kottayam district.

Bird Flu

Avian influenza (AI) is caused by an influenza type A virus that can infect poultry such as chickens, turkeys, pheasants, quail, domestic ducks, geese, and guinea fowl

Avian influenza (AI) viruses are classified by a combination of two groups of proteins: hemagglutinin or “H” proteins, and neuraminidase or “N” proteins

In rare cases, it can affect humans. There are lots of different strains of bird flu virus. Most of them don't infect humans.


National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD)-ICAR

The National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) of Indian Council of Agricultural Research is a premier institute of India for research on exotic and emerging pathogens of animals. 

  • NIHSAD came into existence on 8th Aug., 2014 as an independent institute under ICAR from its original status as High Security Animal Disease Laboratory (HSADL), a regional station of Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Izatnagar.

10. Kerala Moves Supreme Court against Water Release by Tamil Nadu

The Kerala Government has moved the Supreme Court seeking a direction to Tamil Nadu not to release a huge quantity of water in the early hours from the 126­ year­ old Mullaperiyar dam, saying it causes heavy damage to the people living downstream of the dam.

The two judges’ bench of Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and C.T. Ravikumar will hear the plea.
