1. Divya Deshmukh is the National women chess champion

16 years old Divya Deshmukh of Maharashtra won the 47th MPL National women chess title on 2 March 2022.

  • The National Chess championship was held at Bhubaneshwar, Odisha.

  • It was her first senior level chess title.

  • Sakshi Chitalange came second and N. Priyanka came at the third position.

2. Turkey's Ayci declines Air India CEO role

Turkey's Ilker Ayci has declined to take up the  post of the Chief Executive officer of Air India as many people in India were opposed to his appointment . 

  • He was announced as the CEO of Air India by the Tata Group which acquired it from the Government of India . 

  • Ilker Ayci  was a former chairman of Turkish Airlines,and was also an adviser in 1994 to Tayyip Erdogan when the Turkish President was mayor of Istanbul.

  • India does not  have a good relationship with Turkey as Tayyip Erdogan has consistently supported Pakistan on the Kashmir issue and has criticised India.

  • His Turkish connection and especially his link with Erdogan was seen as a security threat for India.

3. First Indian casualty in Russia-Ukraine war

A 21 year old Indian medical student Naveen Gyannagoudar  was killed in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on 1 March 2022. He  was from Karnataka and was waiting outside a grocery store to buy food.  He  was killed when the grocery store was hit by Russian shelling .

  • The easteren Ukrainian city of  Kharkiv is known for its medical education and has a bulk of Indian students who are trapped there due to heavy Russian bombardment .

  •  The Russian forces invaded Ukraine on 24 February after Russian President Vladimir Putin  recognised the breakaway Ukrainian  province of  Donetsk and Luhansk as independent countries.

  • It was condemned by the world and no country recognises these regions of Ukraine as Independent countries. 

  •  The Ukrainian President is Voldoymyr  Zelensky who was  an actor and comedian before he won the Presidential election in 2019.

4. Hasmukh Adia re appointed Bank of Baroda Chairman

Government of India has reappointed former finance secretary Hasmukh Adia as the non-executive chairman of the Bank of Baroda for the next two years, starting from 1 March 2022.

He retired as the Finance Secretary, Government of India in 2018.

5. Madhuri Puri Buch to be the new Chairperson of SEBI

Madhuri Puri Buch has been named the chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for three years. 

  •  She is the first woman to head the capital market regulator as the tenure of incumbent Ajay Tyagi ends on February 28, 2022.

  • Buch will not only be  the first woman but also the first person from the private sector to be appointed as the chairperson of SEBI. 

  • She started her career with ICICI Bank and later went on to become Managing Director(  MD) and  Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at ICICI Securities from Feb 2009 to May 2011. In 2011, she left for Singapore to join Greater Pacific Capital LLP.

How are chief of the various financial regulating bodies in India selected 

The candidates are shortlisted by the Financial Sector Regulatory Appointments Search Committee (FSRASC) headed by the cabinet secretary. 

Based upon interactions, the FSRASC recommended the name to the appointments committee of the cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

6. Sadia Tariq wins Gold medal at Moscow Wushu Stars Championship

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated  Sadia Tariq on winning a gold medal in the Moscow Wushu Stars Championship, which is being held from February 22 to 28. Sadia won the gold medal in the Wushu Championship in Moscow by defeating a local player.

7. Daniil Medvedev is the no 1 tennis player

For the first time since 2004, Daniil Medevedv of Russia became the first  player outside of the 'Big Four' of Rafael Nadal (Spain), Roger Federer (Switzerland), Andy Murray (United Kingdom) and  Novak Djokovic (Serbia) to  be ranked world No. 1 in men's tennis.

  • He became number 1 player  after Djokovic's surprise defeat to world No. 123 Jiri Vesely in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

  • Djokovic of Serbia  holds the all-time record for weeks spent at No. 1 with 361, and Switzerland’s Roger Federer is the second with a record 310 week as the world no 1.

9. Ketanji Brown Jackson to be the first Black women to be the US Supreme Court Judge

President Joe Biden has nominated Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court of the United States of America. If confirmed by the United States  of America Senate she will be the first black woman to be the Judge of the Supreme Court of the United States.

10. Alexander Zverev expelled from ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco for “unsportsmanlike conduct”

 German  tennis player and World number 3 ranked player  Alexander Zverev  was expelled from the  ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco, Mexico  for “unsportsmanlike conduct” after smashing his racket repeatedly against the umpire’s chair following a double defeat.

The German later apologised for his behaviour after he and Brazil’s Marcelo Melo lost 6-2 4-6 (10-6) to the British-Finn pair of Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara.

Zverev came  close to hitting umpire Alessandro Germani  during his tantrum in Mexico.
