The German Navy Chief Vice Admiral Kay Achim Schonbach resigned from his post on 22 January 2022 for his comments made by him during his official visit to India.

  • During his speech at the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analysis, New Delhi he said that Ukraine would never get back the Crimean peninsula which Moscow annexed in March 2014 and the Russian President Putin deserves respect.
  • This was in direct contradiction of the German government policy which considers the Russian annexation of Crimea as illegal and it opposes the Russian aggression against Ukraine.

2. Legendary Footballer Subshash Bhowmick is no more

Former India footballer Subhas Bhowmick,popularly known as ‘Bhombolda' , died on 22 January 2022 in Kolkata  following a prolonged illness.

·He was a part of the Indian team that won a bronze medal in the 1970 Asian Games held at Bangkok, Thailand.

·He also had a successful career as a coach. He helped the East Bengal football club to win the ASEAN Club cup in 2003.

3. Father of Mindfulness and the influential Zen Buddhist Monk “Thich Nhat Hanh” passed away

After dedicating a lifetime to promote peace and compassion in the world, author, activist and Zen Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh left the planet for his heavenly abode, on 22nd January 2022.

  • Known as the Father of Mindfulness, he was born as Nguyen Xuan Bao in 1926. 
  • Ordained as a monk at the age of 16, he is now remembered fondly as one who introduced the concept of mindfulness to the West.
  • Hanh also authored more than a hundred books, including “The Miracle of Mindfulness” and “Peace Is Every Step”.
  • During the Vietnam War in the 1960s, Hanh had met civil rights leader Martin Luther King in the US, and also persuaded him to speak against the conflict. Subsequently, King nominated the monk for Nobel Peace Prize, describing him as, “an apostle of peace and non-violence.”

4. Justice Ayesha Malik: First Woman judge of Supreme Court of Pakistan

Justice Ayesha Malik will be Pakistan's first-ever woman judge of the Supreme Court, a watershed moment in the judicial history of the conservative Muslim country.

  • The historic development came just two days after the bipartisan Parliamentary Committee on the Appointment of Superior Judiciary approved the 55-year-old justice's nomination as the Supreme Court judge. The nomination was sent by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) earlier this month.
  • Justice Malik was appointed as a judge of the Lahore High Court in March 2012. She will now work as a Supreme Court judge until her superannuation in June 2031. She would be in the line to become the chief justice also in January 2030 on the basis of her seniority.
  • Born in 1966, Malik completed her basic education from schools in Paris, New York, and Karachi.
  • She studied law at Pakistan College of Law, Lahore and did her LLM from Harvard Law School, according to the Lahore High Court website.

Indian tennis star Sania Mirza on 19th January 2022 announced that she will hang up her racquet at the end of 2022 season as her body is "wearing down" and the motivation and energy for everyday grind is not the same anymore.

  • Winner of six Grand Slam titles, including three mixed doubles trophies, Sania will retire as India's most accomplished woman tennis player.
  • The 35-year-old made the retirement announcement after losing the Australian Open women's doubles first round with partner Nadiia Kichenok.

6. Malta Legislator Roberta Metsola Becomes Third Female & Youngest President of European Parliament

Roberta Metsola, a legislator from Malta, replaced Italian Socialist David Sassoli (who died on January 11) as the president of the European Parliament on 18 January 2022.

  • Roberta Metsola has been elected to the position for a 2.5-year term.
  • Metsola is 43 years old and has become the third woman, after Simone Weil and Nicole Fontaine, to be elected to the position, the youngest president of the European Parliament.

7. World’s oldest man dead

World’s oldest man Saturnino de la Fuente Garcia dies at the age of 112 years and 341 days.

  • Born in the neighbourhood of Puente Castro, León, on the 11th of February 1909, Saturnino – also known as “El Pepino” – married Antonina Barrio Gutiérrez in 1933.
  • Guinness World Records named De la Fuente as the world’s oldest man in September 2021, when he was 112 years and 211 days.
  • De la Fuente was a cobbler by trade and started working in a shoe factory at age 13.

8. Eminent theatre personality Saoli Mitra Passed away

Saoli Mitra, who was the recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2003, Padma Shri in 2009, and Banga Bibhusan in 2012, died at her residence in South Kolkata on 16th January 2022 of heart ailments.

  • She would be remembered for her solo performance as Draupadi in Naathvati Anaathbat (which she also wrote and directed), and as Sita on Sitakatha or Bitata Bitangso.
  • Mitra was the daughter of legendary theatre artists Shambhu Mitra and Tripti Mitra.

9. Vikram Dev Dutt appointed as new Air India Chief

Senior bureaucrat Vikram Dev Dutt has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director of Air India on 18th January 2022.

  • Dutt is a 1993-batch IAS officer of AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram and Union Territory) cadre.
  • He will get the rank and pay of Additional Secretary.

Further, Chanchal Kumar has been appointed as Managing Director, National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd.

  • Kumar, a 1992-batch IAS officer, is at present posted in his cadre state Bihar.

The appointments were part of a senior level-bureaucratic reshuffle effected by the Central Government on 18th January 2022.

A noted comics artist, writer and illustrator, who brought to life cult  Bengali cartoon characters like Bantul the Great, Handa Bhonda, and Nonte Phonte passed away at the age of 96 years on 18 January 2022. 

  • He was the first and the only comics artist from the country to have received the D. Litt. degree.
  • He was a Padma Shri awardee,who held the record of running the longest comics series by an individual artiste for Handa Bhonda, which has now completed 53 years.
