22nd FIFA men’s football World cup

The 22nd FIFA men’s world cup was formally declared open at a colourful ceremony held at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, Qatar on 20 November. It is for the first time that an Arab country is hosting the football tournament.

India was represented by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. The opening ceremony witnessed performances of  J Balvin, Robbie Williams, Jason Derulo, Clean Bandit, Sean Paul, Nora Fatehi, Black Eyed Peas, Jungkook of BTS, Nicki Minaj, Maluma and Myriam Fares. 

The noted Hollywood actor Morgan Freeman was the narrator at the opening ceremony.

The FIFA World Cup 2022 will be held in Qatar from 20 November to 18 December 2022.

32 countries from five continents are participating in the Tournaments. 

The teams are host Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal, the Netherlands, England, Iran, USA, Wales, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland, France, Australia, Denmark, Tunisia, Spain, Costa Rica, Germany, Japan, Belgium, Canada, Morocco, and Croatia, Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon, Portugal, Ghana, Uruguay, and South Korea.

France is the current world champion having won it in 2018 world cup held in Russia.

Carlos Saura and Chiranjeevi honoured at the 53rd

Renowned Spanish film Director Carlos Saura and Telugu film superstar Chiranjeevi were honoured at the 53rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2022. The 53rd IFFI  which is being held in Panaji, Goa and was inaugurated by the Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting and Youth affairs & Sports Anurag Thakur on 20 November 2022.

The 53rd IFFI being held in Panaji from 20-28 November 2022 is being organised by National Film Development Corporation and Entertainment Society of Goa.

Satyajit Ray Lifetime Award 

Celebrated Spanish film Director Carlos Saura has been honoured with the prestigious Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement award. His daughter Anna Saura accepted the award on behalf of the eminent filmmaker . He has received the Golden Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival for Deprisa Deprisa, along with two Silver Bears for La caza and Peppermint Frappe, a BAFTA for Carmen and three awards at Cannes, among several others.

IFFI Indian Film Personality of the Year Award for 2022

Actor Producer Chiranjeevi Konidela has been chosen for the IFFI Indian Film Personality of the Year Award for 2022.  Chiranjeevi has starred in more than 150 feature films in Telugu, as well as some films in Hindi, Tamil and Kannada. 

He is regarded as one of the most successful and influential actors of Telugu cinema.

In 2006, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award, for his contributions to Indian cinema.

Waheeda Rahman, Rajinikanth, Ilaiyaraaja, S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, Amitabh Bachchan, Salim Khan, Biswajit Chatterjee, Hema Malini and Prasoon Joshi have been honoured with this award in the past.

Max Verstappen wins Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix

Reigning Formula One (F1) world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull team won the season ending F1 Abu Dhabi race held on 20 November 2022 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It was his record 15th title of the 2022 season. He also ended the 2022 season as the world F1 champion. He won his first F1 world championship title in 2021.

The 25 year old Max Verstappen of Holland created a number of records in the history of F1. Some of his records are as follows;

  • He also holds the record for winning a maximum 15 races in a single season. He broke the previous record of 13 race victories in a season jointly held by seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher (2004 season) and four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel (2013 season).
  • Verstappen also set a new record for scoring the most points in a single season - 454. Previously, the record was held by seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton who had amassed 413 points during his championship-winning season in 2019.

First Unani medicine Regional Center of Northeast inaugurated in Silchar, Assam

First Unani medicine Regional Center

The Union Minister of Ayush and Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the new, state of the art complex of Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM) in Silchar, Assam on 20 November 2022. It is the first Unani medicine regional center in the North-East.  The new complex is spread over an area of 3.5 acres built with an investment of Rs 48 crores.

The newly built complex of RRIUM, which will be under Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), the apex government organization for research in Unani Medicine,

The RRIUM, besides providing a wide range of patient care services, will also focus on conducting scientific research on different aspects, fundamental and applied, of Unani medicine, and on diseases that are more prevalent in the North East. The centre is also equipped to screen patients with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) like cardiac, pulmonary, stroke, cancer and diabetes.

Unani System of Medicine 

The Unani System of Medicine owes its origin to Greece. The roots of this system go to Egypt and its sister civilization Mesopotamia. It was further adopted by the Arabs, and was developed and improved tremendously by them. 

The Unani System of Medicine was introduced to India by the Arabs  in the eighth century.

To promote Unani Medicine in India, the government of India set up the Central Council for Research in Unani, Medicine (CCRUM). Now it comes under the Ministry of Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy).


Gautam Adani expects India to become the 2nd largest economy by 2050

Gautam Adani expects India to become

India’s richest man and founder and chairman of the Adani group Gautam Adani said that India will emerge as the second largest economy in the world in 2050 behind China and will become a net exporter of green energy by 2050.

Speaking at the 21st World Congress of Accountants held at Mumbai ,he said that it took the country 58 years to get its first trillion dollars of GDP, 12 years to get to the next trillion and five years for the third trillion.

According to the International Monetary Fund the Indian economy was $ 3.18 trillion in 2021-22. IMF expects the Indian economy to be a $5 trillion economy in 2027-28.

Guatam Adani said that he  expects that “ within the next decade, India will start adding a trillion dollar to its GDP every 12 to 18 months – thereby putting us well on track to be a USD 30 trillion economy by 2050 and with a stock market capitalization that will possibly exceed USD 45 trillion,”

At present the United States of America economy is  $23 trillion with a stock market capitalisation ranging from $45 to 50 trillion.

Adani, whose ports-to-energy conglomerate is investing $70 billion over the next decade in a new energy value chain, said India can become a net green-energy exporter by 2050.

Several districts of Uttar Pradesh have performed very well in the October month 2022 ranking of the Jal Jeevan Mission released by the Union Jal Shakti Ministry on its web site. The districts are ranked according to the target achieved by the districts in providing drinking water through tap to the houses of the identified beneficiaries in the rural areas.

Giving this information Principal secretary (Namami Gange and rural water supply) Anurag Srivastava said that several Uttar Pradesh districts have done well in the rankings, especially Shahjahanpur that has topped across the country in the “aspirant districts as well as best performing district” category..

Classification of Districts 

In Jal Jeevan Survekshan-2023, districts across the country are grouped in various categories. They are as follows;

  • The districts with 100% tap connections in a month are front- runners.
  • Those with 75 to 100% tap connections are high achievers.
  • Those providing 50 to 75% connections have been classified as performers.
  • The ones with up to 25% tap water connections are included in the aspirant category.

India moves up 6 place to be ranked 61st on the Network Readiness Index 2022

India moves up 6 place to be ranked 61st

India has improved its rank by 6 places to be ranked at 61 place in the recently released Network Readiness Index 2022 (NRI 2022). The report prepared by the US-based non-profit body Portulans Institute compliments India and says that “India has a greater network readiness than would be expected given its income level”.

The Network Readiness Index ranks the 131 countries on 58 variables across four pillars of four different pillars: Technology, People, Governance, and Impact.

 India’s Performance 

  • India improved its score from 49.74 in 2021 to 51.19 in 2022. 
  • India  has secured 1st rank in “AI talent concentration”, 
  • 2nd rank in “Mobile broadband internet traffic within the country” and “International Internet bandwidth”, 
  • 3rd rank in “Annual investment in telecommunication services” and “Domestic market size”, 4th rank in “ICT Services exports” and 
  • 5th rank in “FTTH/Building Internet subscriptions” and “AI scientific publications”.
  • India is ranked 3rd out of 36 in the group of lower-middle-income countries after Ukraine (50) and Indonesia (59).

Top three countries on the Network Readiness Index

The United States topped the list with an overall score of 80.3. It was followed by Singapore with a score of 79.35 and Sweden with a score of 78.91.

In the Asia Pacific region, the list was led by Singapore, followed by South Korea and Japan.

Veteran actress Tabassum no more

Popular and veteran actress Tabassum known for her work as a child artiste in several Hindi classics films and also as a host of popular Doordarshan talk show ‘Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan’, died after suffering a cardiac arrest on 19 November 2022.

Born in 1944 in Mumbai to Ayodhyanath Sachdev and Asghari Begum, Tabassum started her career as a child artiste with the 1947 movie ‘Nargis’. At that time, she was known as ‘Baby Tabassum’ in the industry. She also played a minor role in the 1960 historical epic ‘Mughal-e-Azam’, starring Prithviraj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Madhubala.

’No Money for Terror'

The Indian Home Minster Amit Shah proposed a permanent secretariat for institutions focused on countering terror financing built on the ‘No Money for Terror’ conference initiative. He was speaking at the closing session of the third 'No Money for Terror' conference in New Delhi on 19 November 2022.

The two day (18 and 19) conference was organized by India’s premier anti-terrorism agency, National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Amit Shah said that India has sensed the need for permanency of this unique initiative of NMFT (no money for terror), in order to sustain global focus on countering the financing of terrorism.’ He offered India as the host of such a proposed secretariat.

Quoting the International Monetary Fund and World Bank report he said that “criminals across the world launder close to $2 trillion to $4 trillion every year. A major part of this goes in fuelling terrorism.”

However many of the delegates which participated in the conference feels that it will duplicate the other International anti-terror body Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

A total of 72 countries and close to 15 multilateral anti-terror organisations attended the third edition of the conference. China did not attend the conference, while Pakistan was not invited.

Sri Lanka and Jamaica have called for institutionalizing the conference annually.

The first meeting of this kind took place in Paris, France, in 2018, and the second one took place in Melbourne, Australia, in 2019.

Every year 20 November is observed as the world children day to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and to improve children's welfare.

However in India  National Children's Day  is observed on 14 November to mark the birthday of the first Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

 Background to the day 

World Children’s Day was first observed in 1954 as Universal Children's Day. This day has a special significance as on 20th November 1959 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child

Also on this day in 1989 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Child Rights Week 

Child rights week is celebrated across India from November 14-20, starting from National Children’s Day to World Children’s Day.

To mark the occasion UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) has started a campaign ‘goblue’

Under this campaign many  iconic buildings, including the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Parliament building, State Legislative Assembly buildings and iconic historical monuments across India have been  illuminated in blue light on 19 and 20 November for World Children’s Day to convey solidarity on the issue of child rights.

UNICEF said that Dhar village in Madhya Pradesh, and thousands of  village streets in Sarguja, Bastar region and in the central region will go blue in solidarity with child rights.

Regional Ambassador for UNICEF South Asia Sachin Tendulkar, and UNICEF Celebrity Advocate Bollywood actor Ayushman Khurrana also participated at a symbolic futsal match with children.

UNICEF is a United Nations agency which was set up on 11 December 1946 as United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. It was renamed as the United Nations Children's Fund in 1953. 

It provides development and humanitarian assistance to children and mothers.
