  • Oxford University Press (OUP) has announced ‘brain rot’ as the Oxford Word of the Year for 2024.

Key points:

  • The selection process for the word of the year 2024 involved over 37,000 public votes from a shortlist of six words compiled by Oxford University. 
  • The word‘Brain Rot’ highlights the growing concerns around the effects of consuming trivial social media content on mental health.
  • Other words in OUP’s shortlist were demure, dynamic pricing, lore, romantasy, and slop.

Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2024:

  • In 2024, the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award was held in the Silicon Valley of India and the city where Aster DM Healthcare's India operation is headquartered - Bengaluru.
  •  In addition to receiving recognition on the grandest international platform for nursing excellence, the victorious nurse will be awarded a prize of $250,000.
  • Nurse Maria Victoria Juan has been honoured with the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2024, a prestigious recognition that celebrates exceptional contributions to the nursing profession worldwide. 
  • Maria, whose career has been a testament to dedication and resilience, was chosen for this award for her outstanding efforts in transforming the healthcare landscape, particularly in the Philippine Army Health Services and the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award :

  • To recognise the phenomenal contribution of nurses to humanity and bring key stakeholders together, Aster DM Healthcare conducted the first-ever Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award ceremony on 12th May 2022, International Nurses Day at the Atlantis, Dubai. 
  • Nurse Anna Qabale Duba from Kenya emerged victorious from amongst 24,000 nurses and was felicitated by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group.

China Opens First Atmospheric Monitoring Station in Antarctica

Why in the news?

  • China has inaugurated its first atmospheric monitoring station in Antarctica, marking a significant expansion of its research presence on the continent. 

Objectives:

  • Located in Larsemann Hills, East Antarctica ,the Zhongshan National Atmospheric Background Station aims to provide continuous and long-term observations of atmospheric components, contributing valuable data on climate change and the impact of human activity on the environment.
  • This station supportsChina's growing role in Antarctic research, aligning with its broader goals as a 'polar power.'

About Antarctica:

  • Antarctica, the southernmost continent and site of the South Pole, is a virtually uninhabited, ice-covered landmass.
  •  Most cruises to the continent visit the Antarctic Peninsula, which stretches toward South America. It’sknown for the Lemaire Channel and Paradise Harbor, striking, iceberg-flanked passageways, and Port Lockroy, a former British research station turned museum. 
  • The peninsula’s isolated terrain also shelters rich wildlife, including many penguins.

  • Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, informed the Nation about the notification of the Ratapani Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh, as the 57th Tiger Reserve of the country.

About Ratapani Tiger Reserve :

  • Ratapani Tiger Reserve has acore area of 763.8 sq km, buffer area of 507.6 sq km and total area of 1271.4 sq km. It is the 8th tiger reserve of Madhya Pradesh.
  • This conservation initiative will strengthen wildlife management in theforests of Ratapani, Bhopal Sehore area.
  • Standard protection, habitat management, ecotourism, community engagement activities etc shall be adopted which will strengthen Wildlife conservation in the Ratapani Tiger landscape.
  • The local communities will get the desired ecotourism benefits with this and it will help in development of the region.
  • The Guru Ghasidas-Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve in Chhattisgarh is India's 56th tiger reserve.

Union Minister Sh. Kirti Vardhan Singh Launches 'Nano Bubble Technology'

Why in the news?

  • Union Minister of State for Forest, Environment and Climate Change Sh. Kirti Vardhan Singh on Tuesday launched 'Nano Bubble Technology' for cleaning and purifying water of National Zoological Park, Delhi to promote the health of aquatic animals.

 Key points:

  • This technology can clean dirty pond water by removing algae and similar growths
  • It is being tested in thezoo for the first time as a 15-day trial. If successful, it will be used in the zoo.

Objectives:

  • The goal of this technology is to keep water clean, ensuring the health and well-being of aquatic creatures. Clean water prevents foul smells, algae buildup, and discoloration often caused by dirty pond water. 
  • This new technology will improve water quality and benefit the animals.

INDIAN NAVY TO SHOWCASE SPECTACULAR OPERATIONAL DEMONSTRATION AT BLUE FLAG BEACH, PURI

Why in the news?

  • On the occasion of Navy Day 24, the Indian Navy will be displaying its operational might and prowess through an Operational Demonstration (Op Demo)at Blue Flag Beach, Puri, Odisha on 04 December 2024.

Important points:

  • The Hon'ble President of India and the Supreme Commander of the Armed ForcesSmt. Droupadi Murmu will be the Chief Guest for the event hosted by Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff.
  • The event will also be witnessed byGovernor and Chief Minister of Odisha, Union and state cabinet ministers, senior Central and State Government officials, military dignitaries and local populace.
  • This is thesecond time that the Indian Navy is organising a mega event, at a location other than a major naval station. 
  • The Op Demo will witness participation of units with a combinedtonnage of 90,000 tons, with weapons and sensors having the capacity of neutralising any threat emanating from surface, sub surface or air within a radius of 300 Kms.
  •  Over 3500 personnel will be manning the platforms at sea and 350 personnel will be involved in coordination ashore for the Op Demo 24.
  • The Navy shares a historic and strategic bond with Odisha. Ancient Odisha was renowned for its extensive maritime connections, which were central to its identity and prosperity.
  •  Odisha was a major seafaring power with a thriving tradition of overseas trade and cultural exchanges across the Bay of Bengal. Merchants and sailors from Odisha embarked on long voyages, forging ties with distant lands.
  • The Navy Day 24 celebrations will demonstrate the Indian Navy's indigenous state-of-the art technology, taking forward the Gol's resolve of 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and resolve to be the 'Preferred Security Partner and First Responder' in the Indian Ocean Region guided by the vision of Security and Growth for all in the Region (SAGAR).
