 ‘35th Tri-services Commanders’ Conference

Why in news?

  • Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Anil Chauhan chaired the 35th Triservices Commanders’ Conference (TSTCC) at Southern Naval Command, Kochi on 13 November 2024. 

Important point:

  • The Conference was attended by Commanders of all three services, Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) and Officers from various formations across the services.
  •  The 34th TSTCC held in Shimla last year, the 35th edition reviewed the progress and outlined future plans to optimise training facilities across all three services for joint training. 
  • The conference also delved into the dynamics of the geo-strategic situation of the region in the backdrop of developments and the need to orient training and formulate doctrines to meet the future challenges.
  •  Discussions were held to optimise utilization of existing training infrastructure and resources and exploit the collective potential of the respective Training establishments. Emphasis was laid on innovative training strategies that incorporate technology and modern warfare tactics.

About TSTCC:

  •   TSTCC is conducted annually by theTraining Commands of all the three Services in rotation with the aim of enhancing collaboration and training effectiveness while exchanging best practices in training.
  •  The conference also provides a forum to bring together Staff Officers of the Training Commands of the Services on a common platform based on jointmanship and cohesion while forging collaborative training efforts and strategies to achieve combat effectiveness and enhanced operational capabilities. 
  • TSTCC,, has paved the way for meeting prospective challenges collectively, reinforcing the importance of training towards jointmanship, synergy and singularity of efforts at conceptual and functional level.

South Asian Telecommunication Regulators’ Council (SATRC-25)

Why in news?

  • Recently 25th  Meeting of the South Asian Telecommunication Regulators’ Council (SATRC-25) was held at New Delhi, India from 11th to 13thNovember, 2024,hosted by theTelecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in collaboration with the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT), 

Features:

  • SATRC-25’s program features key discussions that emphasize the theme of “Accelerating Telecommunication and ICT Development for Growth and Inclusiveness,” promoting digital transformation for economic and social prosperity in the region.
  • The Meeting was inaugurated by the Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Hon’ble Minister of Communications on the 11th November.
  • SATRC-25 elected Mr. Anil Kumar Lahoti, Chairman of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India as the Chair of SATRC.

 What is SATRC?

  • SATRC is an initiative under the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) that promotes regional cooperation and harmonized regulatory practices across South Asia’s telecommunications sector,With members including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

Objectives of SATRC:

  • SATRC is dedicated to creating a digitally inclusive society by supporting regulatory innovation, policy alignment, and cooperative efforts to bridge digital divides in the region.
  • The meeting concluded with a strong call to action for regulators of all SATRC countries to exchange best practices and  collaborate in tackling the challenges presented by emerging technologies and services.

Pete Hegseth, USA new  defence secretary

Why in news?

  • U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said Tuesday (November 12, 2024) that he is nominating Fox News host and Army veteran Pete Hegseth to serve as his defence secretary.
  • Mr. Hegseth deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan and unsuccessfully ran for Senate in Minnesota in 2012 before joining Fox News.

  • Trump picks John Ratcliffe to be  new CIA director.
  • John Ratcliffe served as director of national intelligence at the end of Donald Trump’s first term.

Mike Waltz:

  • Trump appointed Mike Waltz, China hawk, to be national security adviser.

Susie Wiles:

  • US President-elect Donald Trump has announced his campaign manager, Susan Summerall Wiles, will serve as his White House chief of staff .

Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy:

  • Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Global carbon dioxide emissions -2024

Global carbon dioxide emissions -2024

Why in news?

  • According to a peer-reviewed report by a scientist, the collective has found that carbon emissions are set to rise 0.8% in 2024 since last year. This islower than the 1.2% rise in 2023, over 2022.

Important point:

  • In 2023, the largest absolute contributions to global fossil CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions were from China (31%), the United States (13%), India (8%), and the EU 27 (7%).
  • India’s contribution to go up 4.6%,in 2023 as compared to 2022.
  • These four regions account for 59% of global fossil CO2 emissions, while the rest of the world contributed 41%.
  • EU-27 represents 27 of the most economically developed European countries.



British writer Samantha Harvey won the Booker Prize

Booker Prize -2024

Why in news?

  • British writer Samantha Harvey won the Booker Prize For fiction on Tuesday (November 12, 2024) withOrbital, a short, wonder-filled novel set aboard the International Space Station.

Prize money:

  • Ms. Harvey was awarded the £50,000 (Rs.53.7 lakh) prize for what she has called a “space pastoral”about six astronauts circling the Earth, which she began writing during COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. 
  • Irish author Paul Lynch was awarded  the 2023 Booker Prize for his novel 'Prophet Song’.

Booker Prize :

  • The Booker Prize is an annual literary award given for thebest English-language novel of the year published in either the United Kingdom or Ireland

The Indians have won the Booker Prize:

  • Arundhati Roy: Won the 1997 Booker Prize for Fiction for her novel The God of Small Things. It was the best-selling book by a non-expatriate Indian author. 
  • Kiran Desai:Won the Booker Prize in 2006. 
  • Aravind Adiga:Won the Booker Prize in 2008
