"Oreshnik" hypersonic ballistic missile.

Why in the news?

  • In direct response to Ukraine's use of U.S. and British missiles on Nov. 21, Russia  launched "Oreshnik", one of its newest intermediate-range missiles,at a defence enterprise in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.
  • The city is home to the missile and space rocket company Pivdenmash, known as Yuzhmash to Russians.

Key features of "Oreshnik" hypersonic ballistic missile:

  • The hypersonic missiles can change direction mid-flight, making them extremely difficult to track and intercept with air defenses.
  •  It is believed to have a theoretical range of 3,420 miles, meaning it could reach past Ukraine and into Europe from where it was launched.
  • It travelled at 10 times the speed of sound and so could not be intercepted.

  • The award was jointly presented by Washington Adventist University and AIAM, recognizing his efforts toward inclusive development and minority welfare.

What is the Association of Indian American Minorities (AIAM)?

  • The Association of Indian American Minorities (AIAM), a newly formed non-governmental organization, was launched on Friday atthe Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church in Maryland.
  • The initiative aims tounite and promote the welfare of minority communities within the Indian American diaspora.
  • Jasdip Singh, a renowned Sikh philanthropist, was appointed as the Founder and Chairman of AIAM, supported by a seven-member Board of Directors representing diverse Indian minority communities, including Sikhs, Christians, Hindus, Muslims, and Jews.

Who was Martin Luther King Jr. ?

  • Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister, activist, and political philosopher who was one of the most prominent leaders in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968.

Why in news?

  • The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmupays tributes on the eve of ‘Martyrdom Day’ of Guru Tegh Bahadur .

Who was Guru Tegh Bahadur ?

  • Guru Tegh Bahadur was theninth of ten gurus who founded the Sikh religion and was the leader of Sikhs from1665 until his beheading in 1675.
  •  He was born in Amritsar, Punjab, India in 1621and was the youngest son of Guru Hargobind, the sixth Sikh guru.
  • Tegh Bahadur was executed on the orders of  Aurangzeb, the sixth  Mughal emperor, in Delhi,India.
  • His day of martyrdom (Shaheedi Divas) is commemorated in India every year on 24 November.
  • Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji sacrificed his life for the cause of humanity and for the protection of religion. 
  • He was a great spiritual guide and a true patriot. 
  • He promoted love and unity in society. He encouraged people to fight for truth and justice.
