Mangaldoi in North East  India to get the maiden Government Skill University

Why in the news?

  • Mangaldoi, Assam, is set to house the Northeast's maiden Government Skill University, according to Minister of State for Textiles, Pabitra Margherita. 

Important points:

  • Hon’ble Minister of State for Textiles was addressing the press conference in New Delhi and underlined that the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of Skill Development as one of the top priorities of government, which eventually will take India in the path of development and emphasized the Government of India’s vision to achieve a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047, and outlined the steps being taken to achieve a $30 trillion economy.
  • Textile Ministry encourages skilling through Samarth Yojana, providing high end looms and giving yearns at subsidized rate. 
  • Related to Skill development, HMoST emphasized that the Textiles Ministry is working very hard to implement Samarth Yojana and 3.48 lakh beneficiaries have been trained, out of which 79% has been provided placement and a total 3.6 lakh women beneficiaries have been trained. 
  • In Samarth Program, Textile Ministry also working for Dakshta Aur Kushalta Vikas, and 88% are women beneficiaries, including 26%, ie, 90,320 persons are from Scheduled Caste, 12%, i.e. 42,857 persons from ST community. 
  •  For this Textiles ministry has already approved 6.27 crore rupees for 12 Startup projects. HMoST emphasized the importance of 5 ‘F’s- “Farmer – Fiber – Factor – Fashion – Foreign”.
  • India has got the 3rd largest Startup ecosystem in the world. In 2016 there were 13 Startup unicorns and now we have 118 unicorns worth $ 354 billion, 
  • Shri Pabitra Margherita also stated that the textiles industry is the second largest employer after agriculture, employing approximately 4.5 crore people and the Ministry of Textiles has set a target of achieving 10 crores by 2030. 
  • Shri Margherita briefed the media that under PM Vishwakarma Scheme, comprehensive support is being provided to artisans and craftspeople across 18 different trades.

  • Actor Vikrant Massey was conferred the prestigious Indian Film Personality of the Year award at gala concluding ceremony of the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. 

Important points:

  • The honor was presented by Shri Pramod Sawant, Chief Minister of Goa, and Shri Sanjay Jaju, Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, in recognition of Massey’s extraordinary contributions to Indian cinema.
  • Vikrant Massey’s impressive filmography includes notable projects such as Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), A Death in the Gunj (2016), Lipstick Under My Burkha (2016), Half Girlfriend (2017), Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare (2019), Ginny Weds Sunny (2020), and the science fiction gem Cargo (2020). Each performance showcased his versatility and dedication to his craft, earning critical and audience acclaim.
  • The actor’s ability to connect with audiences through authentic portrayals and relatable characters has made him a true representative of the common man’s voice in cinema. 

About IFFI Indian Film Personality of the Year :

  • The IFFI Indian Film Personality of the Year is a National honour instituted by the International Film Festival of India .
  • The recipient is honoured for their "outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Bharatiya cinema".
  • The award was first instituted in the year 2013 from the 44th IFFI.

59th DGsP/IGsP Conference 2024 

Why in the news?

  • Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah today inaugurated 59thDGsP/IGsP Conference 2024 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Important points:.

  • The conference, being held in a hybrid format, is attended by DGsP/IGsP of all States/UTs and heads of the CAPFs/CPOs physically and by officers of various ranks virtually from all States. National Security Advisor, Ministers of State for Home, Union Home Secretary also participated in the deliberations.
  • On this occasion, Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah conferred Police Medals for Meritorious Service to officers of the Intelligence Bureau and released the Ministry of Home Affairs’ book on ‘Ranking of Police Stations 2024’. 
  • Shri Shah also awarded trophies to the three best police stations.
  • In his inaugural address, Shri Amit Shah congratulated the police leadership for the smooth conduct of the General Elections-2024 and the seamless roll out of the 3 new Criminal Laws.
  • Shri Amit Shah said that the 3 new Criminal Laws have transformed the ethos of the criminal justice system of the country from punishment-oriented to justice-oriented. He emphasised that the spirit of the new laws is rooted in Indian tradition.

LAUNCHING OF 8th AMMUNITION CUM TORPEDO CUM MISSILE 

Why in the news?

  • Launching ceremony of 8th ACTCM Barge, LSAM 22 (Yard 132) was held on 28 Nov 24 at M/s Suryadipta Projects Pvt Ltd, Thane. 

Key points:

  • The Launching Ceremony waspresided over by Cmde VA Giriprasad, AWPS WOT(Mbi).
  • The contract for construction of eleven (11) Ammunition Cum Torpedo Cum Missile Barge was concluded with M/s Suryadipta Projects Pvt Ltd, Thane on 05 Mar 21, a MSME Shipyard.
  •  The Shipyard has indigenously designed these Barges in collaboration with an Indian Ship Designing firm and subsequently successfully model tested at Naval Science and Technological Laboratory, Visakhapatnam to ensure seaworthiness. 
  • These barges have been built in accordance with relevant Naval Rules and Regulation of Indian Register of Shipping (IRS). 
  • The Shipyard has successfully delivered seven of these Barges till date and are being utilised by IN for its operational evolutions by facilitating Transportation, Embarkation and Disembarkation of articles/ ammunition to IN platforms both alongside jetties and at outer harbours.
  • These Barges are proud flag bearers of “Make in India” and “ Aatmanirbhar Bharat ” initiatives of Government of India.



INDIAN NAVY AND SRI LANKAN NAVY CONDUCT SUCCESSFUL ANTI-NARCOTICS OPERATION

INDIAN NAVY AND SRI LANKAN NAVY CONDUCT SUCCESSFUL ANTI-NARCOTICS OPERATION

Why in the news?

  • Based on information received from the Sri Lankan Navy regarding probable narcotics smuggling by Sri Lankan flagged fishing vessels in the Arabian Sea, the Indian Navy responded swiftly through a coordinated operation to localise and intercept the boats.

Important points:

  • Extensive surveillance was undertaken by Indian Naval Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft and Remotely Piloted Aircraft, based on inputs from the Information Fusion Centre (Indian Ocean Region), Gurugram, and an Indian Naval ship was deployed to augment efforts.
  • Two boats were identified based on continuous inputs from theSri Lankan Navy and aerial surveillance by IN aircraft.
  • Subsequently, in a closely coordinated operation between the ship and the aerial assets, both boats were boarded by the ship’s boarding team on 24 and 25 Nov 24, leading to the seizure of approximately 500 kg of narcotics (Crystal Meth). One additional IN ship was also tasked to augment the force level for conduct of anti-narcotics operations.
  • The two boats, along with crew and seized narcotics, are being handed over to Sri Lankan authorities for further legal action.

Significance:

  • The operation reaffirms the close partnership and bonds developed between the two countries and navies.
  •  It also symbolizes the combined resolve of both navies to address regional maritime challenges, and ensure safety and security in the Indian Ocean Region.
