Uttar Pradesh gets Ayushman Utkrishta award 2022 for adding maximum various Health facilities

Uttar Pradesh has been awarded Ayushman Utkrishta award 2022 for adding various health facilities to the health facility register. 

The State was conferred this award by the Chief Executive officer (CEO) of the National Health Authority  R.S Sharma  at the closing ceremony of the Aarogya Manthan organised by the National Health Authority in New Delhi on 26 September 2022.

Achievements of the state 

Uttar Pradesh is the best performing state in the country with 28728 Health facilities added to the National health facility register of the National Health Authority.  

Also the state is the second best State in creating Ayushman Bharat health account (ABHA) with almost 2 crores  Accounts. 

Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM)

  • The Prime Minister launched the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) via video conferencing on 27th September 2021.
  • It aims to provide a health ID (now called as ABHA) to every citizen that will also work as their health account, to which personal health records can be linked and viewed with the help of a mobile application.

Andhra Pradesh gets Ayushman Utkrishtata Puraskaar 2022

Andhra Pradesh was awarded the Ayushman Utkrishtata Puraskaar as the top performing State/Union Territory at the two-day Arogya Manthan 2022 held in New Delhi on 26 September 2022.

The Arogya Manthan 2022 was organized by the National Health Authority to celebrate the completion of 4 years of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) and 1 year of Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).

The award was given away by the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Mansukh Mandaviya.

Giorgia Meloni to become the first female Prime Minister of Italy

A coalition of the right wing alliance has won a majority in the recently held Italian parliamentary election on 25 September 2022.

The coalition has won 235 seats in the 400 member Italian Parliament's lower house, Chamber of Deputies.

The Brother of Italy party led by Giorgia Meloni emerged the largest single party with 118 seats. 

She is likely to be the first female Prime minister of Italy after the foundation of the Italian Republic in 1946.

She will be the 31st Prime Minister of Italy.

The Italian parliament has two houses. The upper house called the Senate has 200 members and the lower house called the Chamber of deputies has 400 members.

International Day for Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

The United Nations observes 26 September every year as the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

Important facts

  • The day aims to raise public awareness of the danger posed to humanity by nuclear weapons and the need for their complete elimination.

  • It provides an opportunity to educate the public and their leaders about the real benefits of eliminating such weapons and the social and economic costs of maintaining them.

Background of the day

  • The United Nations General Assembly, under its resolution 68/32, at the High Level Meeting of the General Assembly on Nuclear Disarmament, held in New York on 26 September 2013, announced the observance of this day in December 2013.

  • International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons has been observed annually since 2014.

  • On July 7, 2017, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was adopted.

  • The treaty is significant because it is the first legally binding multilateral instrument for nuclear disarmament in 20 years.

Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone 

  • In 1967 Nuclear weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (Treaty of Tlatelolco), which established the first nuclear weapons-free zone in a highly populated region.

  • In 1985 the South Pacific became the second nuclear-weapon-free zone (Treaty of Rarotonga).

  • In 1995 Southeast Asia became the third nuclear-weapon-free zone (Bangkok Treaty).

  • In 1996 Africa became the fourth nuclear-weapon-free zone (Pelindaba Treaty).

  • In 2006 Central Asia became the fifth nuclear-weapon-free zone (Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Central Asia).

Union Minister of Rural Development Giriraj Singh will launch the ‘Jaldoot app’ on 27 September

The Union Minister for Rural Development Giriraj Singh will launch the ministry’s developed “Jaldoot App” in New Delhi on 27 September 2022.

The App will be used to capture the water level of selected wells in a village.

The Jaldoot app will enable Gram Rojgar Sahayak (GRS) to measure the water level of selected wells twice a year (pre-monsoon and post-monsoon). These will be representative of the ground water level in that village.

The app will facilitate panchayats with robust data, which can be further used for better planning of works. The ground water data could be utilised as part of the Gram Panchayat Development Plan (GPDP) and Mahatma Gandhi NREGA planning exercises.

Depletion in Groundwater Levels

Ground water levels in various parts of the Country are declining because of continuous withdrawal due to reasons such as increased demand of fresh water for various uses, vagaries of rainfall, increase in population, industrialization and urbanization etc.

As per the assessment of Dynamic Ground Water Resources (2017) carried out by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) in collaboration with States/UTs, out of the total 6,881 assessment units (Block/ Taluks/ Mandals/ watersheds/ Firkas) in the country, 1,186 units in 17 States/UTs have been categorized as ‘over-exploited’ where ‘Annual Ground Water Extraction’ is more than ‘Annual Extractable Ground Water Resource’.

Government scheme for rejuvenation of Groundwater 

Water is a state subject in India. However the central government has launched a few   schemes to recharge the groundwater in India.

Atal Bhujal Yojana 

The Government of India has launched a Rs. 6000 crore Central sector scheme, Atal Bhujal Yojana (Atal Jal) with the assistance of with World Bank assistance. 

The programme was launched on 1 April 2020 for a period of five years.

It aims for sustainable management of ground water resources with community participation in 8562 water stressed Gram Panchayats (GPs) of seven States, viz. Haryana, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. 

Jal Shakti Abhiyan 

Government of India launched Jal Shakti Abhiyan in 2019 in 256 water stressed districts in the country which continued during 2021 also to improve water availability including ground water conditions in these areas. 

Further, the “Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain” campaign for the year 2022 have been launched by the President of India. 

The JSA-2022 shall continue till 30 Nov 2022. 

The campaign has given special emphasis on creation of recharge structures, rejuvenation of traditional water bodies, intensive afforestation etc.

Prime Minister Modi arrives in Japan to attend the state funeral of former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached Tokyo on 26 September 2022 to participate in the state funeral of the former Japanese Prime minister Shinzo Abe to be held on 27 September 2022.

Shinzo Abe was shot dead on 8 July 2022 while campaigning for a parliamentary election.

The state funeral to be held in Budokan will be attended by representatives of over 100 countries including 20 heads of state or head of government.

 Pm Modi would meet separately with his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida and Shinzo Abe's wife in Japan.

Indian and Japan relationship during Shinzo Abe leadership 

  • PM Modi and Shinzo Abe shared very close ties and the latter had gone on record to call PM Modi his most dependable friend. The close ties between the two leaders helped bolster Indo-Japan ties to a special strategic and global partnership.
  • In 2017, he visited Ahmedabad to lay the foundation of India's first bullet train (from Ahmedabad to Mumbai).
  • He was also the chief guest at the Republic Day parade in 2014 during the UPA government.
  • He addressed the joint session of the Indian Parliament in 2007.

National conference on alternative to single use plastic held in Chennai

To promote an environment friendly alternative to the now banned single use plastic in the country, an National Expo on alternatives to banned single use plastics items and Conference of Startups -2022 was inaugurated  in Chennai , Tamilnadu on 26 September 2022.

The conference has been jointly organized by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, and Government of Tamil Nadu.

The government of India banned single use plastics from 1 July 2022.

The conference is an attempt to encourage the Startups to innovate and develop an environment friendly alternatives like items made from natural fibers such as coir, bagasse, rice and wheat bran, plant and agricultural residue, banana and areca leaves, jute and cloth.

Apple to manufacture its latest iPhone 14 in India

The American technology giant Apple has announced on 26 September 2022 that  it will manufacture its latest iPhone 14 in India, as the tech giant moves some of its production away from China.

Many analyst expect Apple to move about 5% of iPhone 14 production from late 2022 to India, which is the world's second-biggest smartphone market after China.

Apple does not manufacture its iconic iPhone models .It rather designs the phone and the manufacturing is mainly done by Taiwanese company Foxconn.

Foxconn, is currently manufacturing the devices at its Sriperumbudur factory on the outskirts of Chennai. 

Apple has been manufacturing iPhones in India since 2017 but these were usually older models. This time with the iPhone 14, Apple is producing its latest model in India for the first time.

Apple’s focus on manufacturing in India highlights the tech giant’s desire to diversify production away from China and boost customers in India, which is currently a small market for the company.

Odisha Village ‘Govindpur’ declared as Birds Village

Located near the Hirakud Lake in Bargarh district of Odisha, Govindpur village has declared itself as a “Birds Village”. The residents of the village have resolved to keep the area pollution free and protect the migratory birds during its nesting period.

The Govindpur village lies within the Lakhanpur wildlife range and the locals have taken the initiative under the guidance of Hirakud wildlife division.

More than 2 lakh birds migrate to Hirakud Reservoir every year for breeding and stay for six months. The migratory birds of about 100 species come to the reservoir, spread over 746 sq km, in October every year.

With the declaration of the Hirakud Lake as Ramsar site in 2022, the area is expected to attract tourists, photographers in large numbers.

Hirakud Dam 

The Hirakud Dam is the world's longest earthen dam built on river Mahanadi in Sambalpur district of Odisha. The dam is 25.79 km long and has an artificial lake called Hirakud reservoir.

It is a multipurpose river project which was conceived by M. Visvesvaraya in 1937, after recurrence of devastating floods in Mahanadi River.

The construction of the dam began in 1947 and it was inaugurated in 1957.

The largest earthen dam in the world is the Tarbela Dam on River Indus in Pakistan. 

The largest earthen dam in India is the Banasura Sagar Dam, on the river  Karamanathodu  which is the tributary of the Kabini River. It is in Kerala. 

It is also the 2nd largest earthen dam in Asia after Tarbela dam.

A red alert issued in the Philippines due to Super Typhoon Noru

Officials issued a red alert on September 25 as Super Typhoon Noru advanced in the Philippines.

Important facts

  • As the cyclone devastated the country's eastern islands, citizens have been asked to evacuate high-risk areas immediately.

  • Due to the Typhoon, winds gusting up to 240 kilometers per hour have increased the risk of landslides, floods and cyclones in the capital Manila.

  • The intensity of the cyclone has increased by 90 kmph in 24 hours.

  • A warning has also been issued for the island of Luzon in the Philippines.

  • Fishermen in Quezon province have been advised not to venture into the sea due to Typhoon Noru.

  • In December 2021, Cyclone Rai caused widespread destruction in the Philippines and killed around 400 people.

  • Cyclone 'Noru' is believed to be the most powerful cyclone to hit the Southeast Asian country this year.

Union Agriculture Minister lays foundation stone of NSC organic seed farm in Morena, MP

The Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar, on 25 September laid the foundation stone of an organic seed farm of the National Seed Corporation (NSC) at Morena. 

Important facts

  • The Central Government has decided to set up a farm at Morena (MP) for the production of organic seeds by reclamation of the land in the rough area.

  • For this, the Government of Madhya Pradesh has allotted 885.34 hectares of land in 4 villages of Morena (Gadora, Jakhauna, Rithora Khurd and Gorkha) to the Union Agriculture Ministry.

  • This land is a rough area of Chambal and farming was not possible due to the ravines in the area.

  • On completion of this, new organic seeds of oilseeds will be available to the farmers of Madhya Pradesh.

  • With this farm farmers will be introduced to modern technology, they will get high yielding seeds and their socio-economic status will improve.

De-notification of 207 hectares of land

  • He said that the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has taken a major decision to recommend de-notification of 207 hectares of land in the National Wildlife Sanctuary of Chambal.

  • Due to de-notification, this area will be outside the sanctuary area, due to which sand will be available at cheap prices for construction/development works at the local level and this will also create new employment opportunities.

National Seed Corporation (NSC)

  • NSC is a Schedule ‘B’-Miniratna Category-I company. 

  • It is wholly owned by the Government of India under the administrative control of Department of Agriculture Cooperation & Farmers Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

  • It was established in March-1963 to undertake production of foundation and certified seeds. 

  • Presently, it is producing certified seeds of about 621 varieties of 80 crops.

INS Sunayna entered Port Victoria Seychelles on 24 Sep 22 to participate in the annual training exercise Operation Southern Readiness of Combined Maritime Forces (CMF).

  • This reaffirms the commitment of the Indian Navy to maritime security in the Indian Ocean region.

  • It also marks the first participation of an Indian Navy ship in the CMF exercise.

  • The ship is scheduled to participate as an associate participant in the capacity building exercise organized by the CMF.

  • Representative delegations from USA, Italy, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and ships from UK, Spain and India are participating in the joint training exercise.

INS Sunayna

  • It is the second Saryu-class patrol vessel of the Indian Navy.

  • It was designed and constructed indigenously by the Goa Shipyard Limited.

  • It is designed for fleet operations, coastal and offshore patrol, maritime surveillance and monitoring of sea lines of communication, and offshore asset and maintenance work.

  • In June 2018, it was deployed as part of "Operation Nistar", a HADR mission to evacuate Indian citizens from cyclone-hit Socotra islands.

Significant positive impact on India-UAE trade from India-UAE CEPA

The India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) that came into force on 1 May 2022 is creating a significant positive impact on India-UAE trade.

Important facts

  • Indian exports to the UAE, excluding petroleum products, grew from US$ 5.17 billion during June-August 2021 to US$ 5.92 billion during June-August 2022. 

  • It denotes an increase of 14% of Indian exports.

  • India’s global non-petroleum exports during the same period (Jun-Aug 2022) grew by 3% on an annual basis.

  • This implies that the growth rate of India's non-petroleum exports to UAE is about 5 times that of India's non-petroleum exports to the world.

  • According to the Commerce and Industry Ministry Indian imports from the UAE during the same period also grew from 5.56 billion dollar to 5.61 billion dollar.

India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA)

  • It was signed on 18 February 2022, during the India-UAE Virtual Summit. 

  • It came into force on 1 May 2022. 

  • It provides for an institutional mechanism to encourage and improve trade between the two countries.

  • CEPA is a type of free trade agreement that covers trade in services and investment and negotiations on other areas of economic partnership.

President Droupadi Murmu Inaugurates Dasara Festival In Mysuru

  • In Karnataka, the origin of Nada Habba is mainly associated with the slaying of the demon Mahishasura by Chamundeshwari.

  • The highlight of the festival is a procession on the day of Vijayadashami (the last day) to mark the victory of good over evil.

  • Important pujas, ceremonies and rituals associated with Dussehra in Mysore are celebrated at the Amba Vilas Palace by the Wodeyar, former rulers of the region.

Indian activist-writer-poet Meena Kandasamy has been declared the winner of the Herman Keston Prize 2022.

  • This Award is given by the PEN Centre in Darmstadt, Germany. The award will be given on 15 November 2022.

  • Meena Kandasamy is a Chennai-born anti-caste activist, novelist and poet. The award recognizes her work on topics of race, gender and ethnic oppression.

  • Ms Kandasamy joins a list of notable figures such as Günter Grass and Harold Pinter, whom Penn has seen as defenders of freedom of expression.

  • Her books are "The Gypsy Goddess," (2014) and "When I Hit You: Or, A Portrait of the Writer as a Young Wife" (2017). She has also published anthologies of her poems, most notably "Ms Militancy" (2010) and This Poem Will Provoke You and Other Poems" (2015).

About Hermann Kesten Award

  • Started in 1985, the award was initially given once in two years till 1993. It has been given on an annual basis since 1994.

  • The competition will be open to individuals and groups to bring innovation to the design of toys using dry waste.

  • These toys will have to comply with the minimum safety standards.

  • Due to the economic development, income growth and many innovations in the country, the demand for toys has increased tremendously.

  • The National Toy Action Plan-2020 has been launched to establish India as a global toy hub and promote traditional handmade toys.

  • The government has prepared a National Toy Action Plan involving 14 ministries to make the domestic toy industry competitive.

  • It aims to make India self-reliant in the toy sector and increase the presence of domestic toys in the global market.

Russia grants citizenship to U.S. whistle blower Snowden

Russian President Vladimir Putin granted Russian citizenship to former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden on 26 September 2022, nine years after he exposed the scale of secret surveillance operations by the National Security Agency (NSA) of the United States.

The 39 years old Snowden fled the United States and was given asylum in Russia after leaking secret files in 2013 that revealed vast domestic and international surveillance operations carried out by the NSA, where he worked.

U.S. authorities have for years wanted him returned to the United States to face a criminal trial on espionage charges.

Russia granted Snowden permanent residency rights in 2020, paving the way for him to obtain Russian citizenship.

National Security Agency is the United States intelligence agency under the Department of Defence. It is responsible for electronic surveillance, cryptographic and communications intelligence and security.
